SUMMARY:Saturday Morning: Precious Garland of the Supreme Path Online
DESCRIPTION:Instructions of Gampopa:  A Precious Garland of the Supreme Path\nTeachings and Oral Transmission with Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\nSaturdays until completed\n9:00am – 10:30am Pacific Time (time updated as of 11/27/2021)\nOnline via Zoom\, link below\nAll welcome to join at any time\nFree of charge\, but donations always welcome\n \nAlthough he lived long ago\, Gampopa is someone who can relate to the suffering and turmoil of modern times. Gampopa\, a medical doctor of his time\, lived through a pandemic in Tibet\, losing his son\, daughter\, and his wife. In his intense suffering\, he sought relief by becoming a monk\, and studying the Dharma (teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni). He entered the Kadampa order\, learning many texts and becoming well versed in the Dharma\, but it was Milarepa\, the fully enlightened yogi of Tibet\, who became his root guru.  Under Milarepa’s teachings\, he learned the visualization practice of tantra.  He combined the step-by-step\, graduated path and logic of the Kadam master Atisha\, with the tantric practice of Milarepa\, and founded the “practice lineage\,” the Karma Kagyu. \n“Gampopa\, the father of the Kagyu tradition in Tibet\, wrote a number of commentaries on Buddha’s teachings. The most notable are The Jewel Ornament of Liberation and A Precious Garland of the Supreme Path. In A Precious Garland\, Gampopa gives precise instructions on what is needed to develop one’s understanding\, meditation and conduct on the spiritual path. Gampopa succinctly outlines in twenty-eight categories what we need to know in order to perfect our spiritual practice*.” \nThis is the fourth text by Gampopa that Khenpo Karten Rinpoche has taught at the Manjushri Dharma Center. Previously he taught the Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, and next he taught on his succinct commentary called the “Excellent Path Of Freedom\, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation in Brief\,” and most recently he taught on the Four Dharmas of Gampopa.   In the Four Dharmas of Gampopa\, one line says:  “May the Dharma become the Path.”   The Precious Garland of the Supreme Path addresses the many facets of turning the Dharma into the Path:  bullet points for right actions and intentions.  In addition\, the text includes many inspiring and poetic descriptions of the ultimate nature of mind and reality.   The text will be shown on the screen\, and resources to purchase or download a free version are below.  There will be time made for questions and answers at the end of the class periodically.   Please join us for the this precious series of teachings! \n\nZoom Link to Join: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86345470369?pwd=Mk1QQmFXVEdkd1N3RWlrbllNWXNFQT09\nMeeting ID: 863 4547 0369\nPasscode: Peace=Love \nOne tap mobile\n+16699009128\,\,86345470369#\,\,\,\,*4296739108# US (San Jose)\n+13462487799\,\,86345470369#\,\,\,\,*4296739108# US (Houston) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nMeeting ID: 863 4547 0369\nPhone Passcode: 4296739108 (no participant ID\, press # to bypass)\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kD7seFIYt \n\nAbout Venerable Gampopa Sonam Rinchen:\n“Gampopa lived from 1070 to 1153. He was born in Central Tibet and trained as a doctor. At age 26\, when his family succumbed to an epidemic\, he promised his wife on her deathbed that he would become a monk and devote his life to Buddhism. He eventually met the great yogi Milarepa and became his foremost student. He founded the system of Mahamudra which combines the tantric teachings of the great siddhas of India with the graduated path teachings of Atisha.*” \n*Note:  The general description of the text and Gampopa’s life is credited and quoted from Shambala Publications: https://www.shambhala.com/snowlion_articles/the-instructions-of-gampopa/ \n\nAbout the Venerable Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\n\n \nKhenpo Karten Rinpoche is an accomplished teacher and practitioner of the Karma Kagyu Lineage and is also trained in the Nyingma Lineage of Buddhism. He was born in the beautiful mountains of the Himalayas of Tibet.  At the age of twelve\, he was ordained at Ja-pa monastery\, where he began his formal education of reading\, writing and ritual practice. At the age of fifteen having completed the basic studies\, he furthered his studies in the Sutra and Tantric texts under the accomplished master Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche and Pema Tsewang Rinpoche for eight years. Subsequently Khenpo Karten Rinpoche went to the hermitage of anther accomplished teacher\, Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche and completed five years of retreat under the great master. In the retreat he completed the practices of the Naropa’s six yoga\, Mahamudra and many others.  In recognition of his achievements\, Sangye Tenzin Ringpoche bestowed upon him the title\, Khenpo Karma Lekshe Tharchin in 1994. \nIn 1996\, he left Tibet and traveled to Dharamsala\, India to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Upon His Holiness’ advice\, he spent another two years doing retreat. H.H Dalai Lama also recognizing his achievement\, bestowed upon him the title Khenpo Rinpoche. After his retreat\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche was requested by H.E Tai Situ Rinpoche to go to the monastery of Venerable Tsoknyi Rinpoche\, to teach the young monks there. \nKhenpo Karten arrived in the United States in 2008\, and taught in the Monterey Bay area for the first time in September of that year. After meeting a group of prospective students and seeing the hills of Big Sur which remind him of Tibet\, he returned in 2009 to make the Monterey Bay his permanent home. Since then\, Rinpoche has established the Manjushri Dharma Center (MDC) in Pacific Grove\, California\, which has become his main teaching location and his home residence.  With unflinching faith in SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon-Rinpoche Part of Weekend Metta Sutra Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, February 28 at 1:00pm\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche will give a Dharma talk as part of a three-day\, weekend retreat at the Mount Adams Buddhist Temple at Trout Lake Abbey.  The retreat begins Friday\, Feb. 26 and runs through Sunday\, Feb.28\, 2021.  You can see all the details of the weekend retreat\, entitled “3-Day Buddhist Mahayana Retreat on Metta and Practice\,” hosted by the Venerable Thich Minh Tinh (Thay Kozen). \nAttendees at the January weekend retreat hosted by Manjushri Dharma Center will recall that Thay Kozen taught on the Metta Sutra during our retreat\, and taught these beautiful verses and practice: \n***\nEight sentences that\ncan change the world:May I be Well\nMay I be Happy\nMay I know Love\nMay I know PeaceMay you be Well\nMay you be Happy\nMay you know Love\nMay you know Peace \nStart out by holding your right hand over the center of your chest\, then place your left hand over your right one and gently hug your chest.\nThen say the above sentences.   Think of yourself as you say the “May I …”  Think first of a loved one as you say the “May you…” Then to cleanse your heart\, think of someone who has caused you pain or distress and repeat the “May you…” \nThe Buddha tells us – What we think we become.

SUMMARY:Monday Night Chanted Prayers Online-Green Tara Practice
DESCRIPTION:The feminine embodiment of enlightened activity\, Green Tara is the swift liberator\, a compassionate and loving protector in times of distress and great danger. Through meditating on the form and mantra Arya Tara\, and chanting the Praises to her 21 different manifestations\, we receive the blessings to become inseparable from Tara herself\, actualizing the potential to liberate all motherly sentient beings from the suffering ocean of samsara. \nShe is known as the Mother of all Buddhas\, born from Chenrezig’s tear of compassion. She will swiftly come to comfort and protect those who supplicate her. Especially from emotional\, and physical sufferings. In her hands she holds utpala flowers which symbolize power and purity. \nThis is also my daily practice; we will pray for overcoming fear and clearing of obstacles. Also pray for those who have passed away from coronavirus.   We will recite the mantra “OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA “.  You can see me and recite the mantra at the same time so we can practice together for those who have recently died. Thank you and Tashi Delek. \nPrayers will be recited in both Tibetan and English.  (Prayer text will be shown on screen\, but we don’t have permission yet to add to our website) \nWritten by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, adapted for the Monday night session.  \nLink to Join Prayer Practice via Zoom:  Monday Night Prayer Practice\nPassword required:  WorldPeace\nFor questions\, please contact:  rachelmdc2016@gmail.com. \n

SUMMARY:Monday Night Chanted Prayers Online–Padmasambhava Guru Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Guru Rinpoche\, also known as Padmasambhava or the Precious Master\, is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. He established the Buddhadharma in Tibet\, and then developed the practice so that all the teachings of Buddha were preserved as a living tradition that has continued down to the present day. \nTrinley Nyingpo\, the “Essence of Enlightened Activity\,” is the concise Guru Rinpoche sadhana practice from the Tugdrub Barche Kunsel\, a hidden treasure teaching discovered by the King of Treasure Revealers\, Chogyur Dechen Lingpa in the mid-19th century. \nThe central visualization for this practice is a triad of deities of the Three Kayas (“Enlightened Bodies”): the Dharmakaya Buddha Amitayus\, the Samboghakaya Buddha Avalokitesvara\, and the Nirmanakaya Buddha Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). It also includes twelve additional manifestations of Guru Rinpoche. \nOutwardly\, Guru Rinpoche was a fully enlightened being who was invited from India by the Tibetan King Trisong Deutsen in the 8th century to establish the Vajrayana Buddhist teachings in Tibet. He personally blessed every square foot of Tibet and concealed innumerable “treasure teachings” (Terma) for future generations to receive and practice when the time was especially right. SUMMARY:Lhabab Duchen Celebration Online
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 7th\, at 6:00pm Pacific Time\, we will celebrate the auspicious day of Lhabab Duchen\, one of the most holy days in the Buddhist calendar. It commemorates the Buddha’s descent to the human world from the Heavenly Realms where his mother had been reborn shortly after giving birth. In order to repay her kindness\, he taught the Dharma to her and other gods there before once again Turning the Wheel of Dharma for our benefit. \nOn this day\, all the karmic effects of our actions are multiplied many millions of times. For this reason\, virtuous conduct and group spiritual practice\, dedicated for the benefit of all “mother sentient beings”\, is emphasized. \nWe will recite Shakyamuni prayers in Tibetan and English. \nZoom link below: \nLink to Join Prayer Practice via Zoom:\nSaturday Night Nov. 7th Lhabab Duchen Prayer Practice\nPassword required:  WorldPeace \nOr join by phone (your normal phone charges may apply):\nUS: +1 669 900 6833 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 970 1801 1835\nInternational numbers available: https://middlebury.zoom.us/u/abeH9hRvO3\nPhone Password: 470102

SUMMARY:Monday Night Chanted Prayers Online--Padmasambhava Guru Yoga
Trinley Nyingpo is one such terma. \nInwardly\, Guru Rinpoche is the embodiment of all the Wisdom Gurus of the past\, present\, and future\, and the essence of our own enlightened mind. \nPrayers will be recited in both Tibetan and English. \nMain text:  Trinley Nyingpo\, the “Essence of Enlightened Activity\,” is the concise Guru Rinpoche sadhana practice from the Tugdrub Barche Kunsel \nLineage text: Thugdrup Barched Kunsel Lineage Prayer \nAbbreviated text:  Awakening to the Guru’s Pure Vision \nLink to Join Prayer Practice via Zoom:  Monday Night Prayer Practice\nPassword required:  WorldPeace\n  \nOr join by phone (your normal phone charges may apply):\nUS: +1 669 900 6833 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 970 1801 1835\nInternational numbers available: https://middlebury.zoom.us/u/abeH9hRvO3\nPhone Password: 470102

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Chanted Prayers Online--Calling the Guru from Afar
DESCRIPTION:Calling the Guru from Afar is a heartfelt request to the guru for blessings to realize all the stages of the path to enlightenment\, as well as a meditation on the nature of the guru. \nThis beautiful devotional guru yoga practice was composed by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye; one of Tibet’s greatest scholars and poet. He also wrote more than 90 volumes of works known as the Great Treasuries.\n\nJamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye’s second reincarnation is Jamgon Kongtrul Palden Khyentse Oser\, who was born in Tsurpu as the son of 15th Karmapa. Palden Khyentse Oser was a renowned Mahamudra master and passed on the lineage to the 16th Karmapa. My root guru’s teacher was the second Jamgon Kongtrul and this text is also very much connected to our guru yoga practice that we hold regularly.\n\nJamgon Kongtrul’s best student was a very good practitioner and requested him to write a guru yoga practice . In her mind he is the triple gems as well as the lama\, yidam and dakini. Being humble he said that he did not have any good qualities but agreed to write this precious text for her. First he paid homage to all the lineage gurus from the four major lineages and then placed his own name at the end.One of his best works was “Seven Points of Mind training” which is a direct path to the practitioner’s heart and transforms his mind. That is why it is also called the great path of awakening.\n\nPlease do join us. Thank you and Tashi Delek.\n\nHere is the link to the text for reference:\nhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/10Lb6ZK8mZwoaaiePE2CMiU6vd0CMXBB5L92YBSsRdA8/edit?usp=sharing\nVia Facebook Live:  Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook \nEditor’s note:  There is a wonderful version of this chanted prayer with beautiful images of Tibet on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhuW8xhcbUA.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Chanted Prayers Online--Medicine Buddha
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, October 14th\, at 6.00PM PT we will practice Medicine Buddha supplication prayers. The practice of Sangye Menla\, King of Lapis Lazuli light is very powerful for healing both the inner sickness of afflictions as well as outer physical illnesses and sufferings. The 12 syllables of Medicine Buddha’s name in Sanskrit also represents his 12 great vows for the benefit of all sentient beings. \n\nThis Medicine Buddha supplication also forms part of my daily practice; we will pray for healing of the body as well as invoking Medicine Buddha’s blessings especially during this great time of suffering in the world. We will also pray for those who have passed away from coronavirus. If anyone would like to join please sit and recite the mantra “Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha Bekanze Radza Samudgate Soha”. The prayers will be recited in Tibetan\, but please participate. You can see me and recite the mantra at the same time so we can practice together for those who have recently died. Thank you and Tashi Delek. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVia Facebook Live:  Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook\n\nWritten by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, posted to the Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook page.   Photo credit Miles McBreen.

SUMMARY:Monday Night Chanted Prayers Online--Guru Rinpoche Practice
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 5th\, 2020 at 6:30pm PT via Zoom\, Khenpo Karten will lead us in the practice of Guru Rinpoche. \nGuru Rinpoche\, also known as Padmasambhava or the Precious Master\, is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. Trinley Nyingpo is one such terma. \nInwardly\, Guru Rinpoche is the embodiment of all the Wisdom Gurus of the past\, present\, and future\, and the essence of our own enlightened mind. \nPrayers will be recited in both Tibetan and English. \nMain text:  Trinley Nyingpo\, the “Essence of Enlightened Activity\,” is the concise Guru Rinpoche sadhana practice from the Tugdrub Barche Kunsel \nLineage text: Thugdrup Barched Kunsel Lineage Prayer \nAbbreviated text:  Awakening to the Guru’s Pure Vision \nLink to Join Prayer Practice via Zoom:  Monday Night Prayer Practice\nPassword required:  WorldPeace\n

Chenrezig is also believed by Tibetans to be the actual progenitor of the Tibetan people\, and HH Dalai Lama and the Karmapa\, who are considered living Buddhas\, are also believed to be emanations of Chenrezig. It is said that even babies upon birth know the mantra OM MANI PADME HUM.\n\nPlease do join us next week for this profound practice. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Chöd Prayer Practice-Online
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, 6/10\, at 6:00PM PST on Facebook Live and participate in the practice of Chöd. (Hopefully no technical issues like last week–so sorry everyone!)\n\n\nWe have added here the text for the practice:  The Longchen Nyingthig CHÖD PRACTICE\, “The Loud Laugh of the Dakini.”\n\nWe would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to Michael Martinez\, who has been volunteering on Wednesday evenings to help Rinpoche create beautiful\, meaningful live videos.   Thank you Michael!\n\n\nThe link to join and more about the prayer practice of Chöd is below. \n\n\n\n\nChöd\, which means “to cut\,” is a profound path of severing dualistic fixation and ego-clinging. For the chod practitioner\, the body is regarded as the primary object of clinging. Through visualizing one’s consciousness as the female Buddha T’hroma Nagmo (The “Wrathful Black Mother”) the yogi or yogini offers the ordinary body to the assembled guests: enlightened beings\, gods and demons (personifications of the five poisons)\, and those owed karmic debts\, purifying negative karma and accumulating merit on a vast scale. Combining the view of the Prajnaparamita Sutra with the highest view of Dzogchen\, Chöd is known for its haunting melodies and ritual instrumentation. When performed for others\, it is a powerful healing ritual.\n\n\n\nVia Facebook Live:  Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook\n\nWritten by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, posted to the Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Saga Dawa Duchen Teaching on Love and Compassion-Online
DESCRIPTION:Saga Dawa is the most significant “merit multiplying month ” for Vajrayana Practitioners and Tibetan Buddhism in general. \nIn Tibetan\, “Dawa” refers to the whole “month” and “Saga” is the name of a star  in the sky which appears especially brighter during the fourth lunar month. Saga Dawa begins on May 23 through June 22\, 2020.  The 15th day of this fourth lunar month which is the full moon is called Saga Dawa Duchen.   June 5th is the full moon in 2020.  This is the most important day of the year for all Vajrayana practitioners.   It commemorates the birth\, enlightenment\, and parinirvana of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni. \nAny positive actions like doing month long retreats\, meditation\, making lamp offerings\, prostrations\, animal liberation\, the six paramitas or any other form of virtuous Dharma activities made by the body \,speech and mind during this whole month will be multipled 100\,000 times. In the same way\, any unwholesome or negative activities will also be multipled 100\,000 times. \nOn Friday\, June 5th at 7pm via Facebook Live\, Rinpoche will give a teaching on love and compassion.  The teaching will be in Tibetan\, but all Rinpoche’s students are welcome to “tune in” and rejoice in his teaching.  The teaching is planned to be on the Portland Sangha’s Facebook page\, but may be also be on the Manjushri Dharma Center (be prepared to check both sites). \nMore about this teaching from the Portland Sangha: \n\n།རང་གཞན་དོན་ནི་རང་བསྒྲུབ་ཕྱིར།\n།བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་ནི་བསྐྱེད་པར་བགྱི།\n།བྱང་ཆུབ་མཆོག་གི་སེམས་ནི་བསྐྱེད་བགྱིས་ནས།\n།སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་བདག་གིས་མགྲོན་དུ་གཉེར།\n\nFollowing His Holiness’ recent Avalokiteshwara empowerment\, it is fitting that we contemplate on the practice of Compassion. In these trying times in the midst of uncertainties and in the absence of our annual Saga Dawa activities at Bodkhang\, we are pleased to announce an online teaching by Ven. Khenpo Karten Rinpoche on བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་བསྐྱེད (Awakening the Bodhicitta Mind). \nRinpoche will teach the essence of Bodhicitta Mind\, its significance in our lives\, how to incorporate it in our daily practice\, and further develop its profound understanding through meditation.\n\nVia Facebook Live:  Check both\n\nNorthwest Tibetan Cultural Association Facebook\n\nManjushri Dharma Center Facebook\n  \nREAD MORE:  Happy Saga Dawa
