SUMMARY:Monday Night Chanted Prayers Online--Guru Rinpoche Practice
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 5th\, 2020 at 6:30pm PT via Zoom\, Khenpo Karten will lead us in the practice of Guru Rinpoche. \nGuru Rinpoche\, also known as Padmasambhava or the Precious Master\, is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. He established the Buddhadharma in Tibet\, and then developed the practice so that all the teachings of Buddha were preserved as a living tradition that has continued down to the present day. \nTrinley Nyingpo\, the “Essence of Enlightened Activity\,” is the concise Guru Rinpoche sadhana practice from the Tugdrub Barche Kunsel\, a hidden treasure teaching discovered by the King of Treasure Revealers\, Chogyur Dechen Lingpa in the mid-19th century. \nThe central visualization for this practice is a triad of deities of the Three Kayas (“Enlightened Bodies”): the Dharmakaya Buddha Amitayus\, the Samboghakaya Buddha Avalokitesvara\, and the Nirmanakaya Buddha Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). It also includes twelve additional manifestations of Guru Rinpoche. \nOutwardly\, Guru Rinpoche was a fully enlightened being who was invited from India by the Tibetan King Trisong Deutsen in the 8th century to establish the Vajrayana Buddhist teachings in Tibet. He personally blessed every square foot of Tibet and concealed innumerable “treasure teachings” (Terma) for future generations to receive and practice when the time was especially right. Trinley Nyingpo is one such terma. \nInwardly\, Guru Rinpoche is the embodiment of all the Wisdom Gurus of the past\, present\, and future\, and the essence of our own enlightened mind. \nPrayers will be recited in both Tibetan and English. \nMain text:  Trinley Nyingpo\, the “Essence of Enlightened Activity\,” is the concise Guru Rinpoche sadhana practice from the Tugdrub Barche Kunsel \nLineage text: Thugdrup Barched Kunsel Lineage Prayer \nAbbreviated text:  Awakening to the Guru’s Pure Vision \nLink to Join Prayer Practice via Zoom:  Monday Night Prayer Practice\nPassword required:  WorldPeace\n

Chenrezig is also believed by Tibetans to be the actual progenitor of the Tibetan people\, and HH Dalai Lama and the Karmapa\, who are considered living Buddhas\, are also believed to be emanations of Chenrezig. It is said that even babies upon birth know the mantra OM MANI PADME HUM.\n\nPlease do join us next week for this profound practice. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Chöd Prayer Practice-Online
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, 6/10\, at 6:00PM PST on Facebook Live and participate in the practice of Chöd. (Hopefully no technical issues like last week–so sorry everyone!)\n\n\nWe have added here the text for the practice:  The Longchen Nyingthig CHÖD PRACTICE\, “The Loud Laugh of the Dakini.”\n\nWe would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to Michael Martinez\, who has been volunteering on Wednesday evenings to help Rinpoche create beautiful\, meaningful live videos.   Thank you Michael!\n\n\nThe link to join and more about the prayer practice of Chöd is below. \n\n\n\n\nChöd\, which means “to cut\,” is a profound path of severing dualistic fixation and ego-clinging. For the chod practitioner\, the body is regarded as the primary object of clinging. Through visualizing one’s consciousness as the female Buddha T’hroma Nagmo (The “Wrathful Black Mother”) the yogi or yogini offers the ordinary body to the assembled guests: enlightened beings\, gods and demons (personifications of the five poisons)\, and those owed karmic debts\, purifying negative karma and accumulating merit on a vast scale. Combining the view of the Prajnaparamita Sutra with the highest view of Dzogchen\, Chöd is known for its haunting melodies and ritual instrumentation. When performed for others\, it is a powerful healing ritual.\n\n\n\nVia Facebook Live:  Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook\n\nWritten by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, posted to the Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Saga Dawa Duchen Teaching on Love and Compassion-Online
DESCRIPTION:Saga Dawa is the most significant “merit multiplying month ” for Vajrayana Practitioners and Tibetan Buddhism in general. \nIn Tibetan\, “Dawa” refers to the whole “month” and “Saga” is the name of a star  in the sky which appears especially brighter during the fourth lunar month. Saga Dawa begins on May 23 through June 22\, 2020.  The 15th day of this fourth lunar month which is the full moon is called Saga Dawa Duchen.   June 5th is the full moon in 2020.  This is the most important day of the year for all Vajrayana practitioners.   It commemorates the birth\, enlightenment\, and parinirvana of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni. \nAny positive actions like doing month long retreats\, meditation\, making lamp offerings\, prostrations\, animal liberation\, the six paramitas or any other form of virtuous Dharma activities made by the body \,speech and mind during this whole month will be multipled 100\,000 times. In the same way\, any unwholesome or negative activities will also be multipled 100\,000 times. \nOn Friday\, June 5th at 7pm via Facebook Live\, Rinpoche will give a teaching on love and compassion.  The teaching will be in Tibetan\, but all Rinpoche’s students are welcome to “tune in” and rejoice in his teaching.  The teaching is planned to be on the Portland Sangha’s Facebook page\, but may be also be on the Manjushri Dharma Center (be prepared to check both sites). \nMore about this teaching from the Portland Sangha: \n\n།རང་གཞན་དོན་ནི་རང་བསྒྲུབ་ཕྱིར།\n།བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་ནི་བསྐྱེད་པར་བགྱི།\n།བྱང་ཆུབ་མཆོག་གི་སེམས་ནི་བསྐྱེད་བགྱིས་ནས།\n།སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་བདག་གིས་མགྲོན་དུ་གཉེར།\n\nFollowing His Holiness’ recent Avalokiteshwara empowerment\, it is fitting that we contemplate on the practice of Compassion. In these trying times in the midst of uncertainties and in the absence of our annual Saga Dawa activities at Bodkhang\, we are pleased to announce an online teaching by Ven. Khenpo Karten Rinpoche on བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་བསྐྱེད (Awakening the Bodhicitta Mind). \nRinpoche will teach the essence of Bodhicitta Mind\, its significance in our lives\, how to incorporate it in our daily practice\, and further develop its profound understanding through meditation.\n\nVia Facebook Live:  Check both\n\nNorthwest Tibetan Cultural Association Facebook\n\nManjushri Dharma Center Facebook\n  \nREAD MORE:  Happy Saga Dawa

The practice of Sangye Menla\, King of Lapis Lazuli light is very powerful for healing both the inner sickness of afflictions as well as outer physical illnesses and sufferings. The 12 syllables of Medicine Buddha’s name in Sanskrit also represents his 12 great vows for the benefit of all sentient beings. \n\nThis Medicine Buddha supplication also forms part of my daily practice; we will pray for healing of the body as well as invoking Medicine Buddha’s blessings especially during this great time of suffering in the world. We will also pray for those who have passed away from coronavirus. If anyone would like to join please sit and recite the mantra “Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha Bekanze Radza Samudgate Soha”. The prayers will be recited in Tibetan\, but please participate. You can see me and recite the mantra at the same time so we can practice together for those who have recently died. Thank you and Tashi Delek. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVia Facebook Live:  Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook\n\nWritten by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, posted to the Manjushri Dharma Center Facebook page.   Photo credit Miles McBreen.

SUMMARY:Guru Rinpoche Prayer Practice Online
DESCRIPTION:Guru Rinpoche\, also known as Padmasambhava or the Precious Master\, is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. \nKhenpo Karten Rinpoche first introduced a small group of students to this practice just a few weeks before Shelter-in-Place orders were given\, and now we are so fortunate to be able to receive and practice this profound teaching with him from all over the world. The Treasures of Chogyur Dechen Lingpa were the focus of Rinpoche’s practice during his 3-Year Retreat in Tibet. \nPrayers will be recited in both Tibetan and English. \nMain text:  Trinley Nyingpo\, the “Essence of Enlightened Activity\,” is the concise Guru Rinpoche sadhana practice from the Tugdrub Barche Kunsel \nLineage text: Thugdrup Barched Kunsel Lineage Prayer \nZoom Link to Join:  Guru Rinpoche Yoga Online at MDC \nFor questions\, please contact:  rachelmdc2016@gmail.com. \nTo join by phone: \nUS: +1 669 900 6833 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 253 215 8782\nMeeting ID: 614 874 367

SUMMARY:Canceled: The Instructions of Gampopa: A Precious Garland of the Supreme Path
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with COVID-19 precautions\, the class is canceled until further notice. \nBy the blessings of the Triple Gem Refuge\, may this pandemic be swiftly pacified and may all beings be free from the fear of illness.\n  \nInstructions of Gampopa:  A Precious Garland of the Supreme Path\nFour-Session Teaching and Oral Transmission with Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\nSundays\, March 8-29\, 10:00am – 12:00pm\nManjushri Dharma Center\n724 Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove\n$10.00 donation per class requested\nNo one turned away for lack of funds\n \nThe teachings will be live-streamed and recorded via Facebook–may the teachings help and spread worldwide! \n“Gampopa\, the father of the Kagyu tradition in Tibet\, wrote a number of commentaries on Buddha’s teachings. The most notable are The Jewel Ornament of Liberation and A Precious Garland of the Supreme Path. In A Precious Garland he gives precise instructions on what is needed to develop one’s understanding\, meditation and conduct on the spiritual path. Gampopa succinctly outlines in twenty-eight categories what we need to know in order to perfect our spiritual practice. (note 1).” \nKhenpo Karten Rinpoche\, resident monk and spiritual teacher of the Manjushri Dharma Center\, will lead a four-session teaching and oral transmission of this text\, Sundays 10am-12pm\, March 8-29th.  Rinpoche previously taught on the Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, and he composed and taught on his succinct commentary called the “Excellent Path Of Freedom\, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation in Brief\,” and also taught on the Four Dharmas of Gampopa.   In the Four Dharmas of Gampopa\, one line says:  “May the Dharma become the Path.”   The Precious Garland of the Supreme Path addresses the many facets of turning the Dharma into the Path–bullet points for right actions and intentions.  In addition\, the text includes many inspiring and poetic descriptions of the ultimate nature of mind and reality.    Please join us for the this precious teaching. \nAbout Gampopa: \n“Gampopa lived from 1070 to 1153. He was born in Central Tibet and trained as a doctor. At age 26\, when his family succumbed to an epidemic\, he promised his wife on her deathbed that he would become a monk and devote his life to Buddhism. He eventually met the great yogi Milarepa and became his foremost student. He founded the system of Mahamudra which combines the tantric teachings of the great siddhas of India with the graduated path teachings of Atisha.(note 1)” \n  \nNote 1:  The general description of the text and Gampopa’s life is credited and quoted from Shambala Publications: https://www.shambhala.com/snowlion_articles/the-instructions-of-gampopa/

SUMMARY:Introduction to Tibetan Buddhist Iconography
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Tibetan Buddhist Iconography\n& Tour of the Manjushri Dharma Center Shrine Room \nTibetan Vajrayana Buddhism is known for long and rich tradition of symbolism: brilliant colors\, beautiful altar offerings\, mandalas\, deities depicted in paintings and statues\, and more. Understanding the multi-layered meanings of Tibetan Buddhist iconography is crucial\, if we are to fully access the profound meaning of the Vajrayana path and connect to our true nature as Buddhas.\n\nMDC sangha member\, Aaron Joseph (Pema Tsultrim)\, a former monk with a keen interest in Buddhist art and ritual\, will offer a tour of the MDC shrine room to acquaint both newcomers and committed students alike to some of the powerful meaning behind our center’s sacred imagery. Your questions will be addressed throughout the hour.\n\nNo charge. Donations to MDC are welcome and appreciated.

SUMMARY:A Public Teaching by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche on "The Four Seals of Buddhism"
DESCRIPTION:As Buddhism developed and spread throughout the world\, many distinct lineages and philosophical schools emerged. While the various Buddhist traditions differ widely in their prayers and practices\, they are all unified by a belief in the “Four Seals or Characteristics of Dharma”: \nImpermanence \nEmotions resulting in pain/suffering \nEmptiness or Selflessness \nEnlightenment that is beyond concepts \nIn this public talk\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, a very caring and compassionate teacher in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism\, will give a clear and accessible teaching on the meaning of the Four Seals and how to put an understanding of them into daily practice. \nWe invite you to take advantage of this special opportunity. Whether you are a Buddhist\, curious about Buddhism\, or have an interest in comparative religions\, this program will be very insightful and beneficial. \nKhenpo Karten Rinpoche was born in Nangchen\, East Tibet\, and received a traditional monastic education at several of Asia’s greatest Buddhist training centers. He suffered many hardships with the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Upon his escape to India\, Rinpoche was subsequently authorized by the Dalai Lama to come to the West and teach the Dharma. Rinpoche has groups of students in Europe\, Asia\, and North America\, and currently is the Spiritual Director at the Manjushri Dharma Center in Pacific Grove\, CA. \nSuggested donation: $20 \nAll are welcome to attend regardless of ability to make a donation.

SUMMARY:Daylong Teaching Retreat "The Four Dharmas of Gampopa"

This is a special opportunity. \nPlease bring a bag lunch to enjoy. Snacks and tea will be available throughout the day. \nSuggested donation: $40 for the general public\, $25 for students and those with limited income. DESCRIPTION:July 16th\, 2018 marks the Tibetan holy day of Chokhor Duchen\, honoring the day that the Buddha Shakyamuni first taught the Four Noble Truths\, and first turned the wheel of the Dharma.  We will celebrate with a public talk on the Four Noble Truths given by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche and special prayers.  Please join us for this profound teaching on this very special occasion!  Free event\, but donations always appreciated.\n\n\nLearn More\nChokor Duchen Festival in Tibet is one of the four great seasonal festivals (Losar\, Saga Dawa\, Chokor Duchen and Lhabab Duchen) celebrated by all Tibetan Buddhists. During those times\, it is believed that the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied ten million times.\nChokhor means “Prayer Wheel” or “Dharma Wheel”\, the common religious objects in Tibet\, and Duchen means “great occasion” in Tibetan. Hand held wheels are hollow wooden or metal cylinders attached to a handle which when turned are believed to spread spiritual blessing. Mantras—such as Om Mani Padme Hum\, believed to invoke the attention and blessings of Chenrezig\, the Buddha of compassion—may be printed.\nTradition has it that Buddha was not convinced through his own reflections that teaching what he had discovered through his meditations would be of any benefit to others. It took the intercession of the great gods\, Brahma and Indra\, to persuade him to do so for the benefit of all sentient beings. The Buddha then addressed the five people who had been his companions during the time spent with the forest yogins concerning the Four Noble Truths:1. The truth of suffering\nThe First Noble Truth often is translated as “Life is suffering.” Many people new to Buddhism tune out as soon as they hear this. But the Pali word dukkhaalso refers to anything that is temporary\, conditional\, or compounded of other things. Even something precious and enjoyable is dukkha\, because it will end. Related to the nature of life is the nature of self. Are we not also temporary\, conditional and compounded of many parts? We can understand that life is impermanent but are we\, also\, impermanent? The Buddha taught that before we can understand life and death we must understand the self.2. The truth of the cause of suffering\nThe Second Noble Truth teaches that the cause of suffering is craving or thirst (tanha). We continually search for something outside ourselves to make us happy. But no matter how successful we are\, we never remain satisfied. The Buddha taught that this thirst grows from ignorance of the self. We go through life grabbing one thing after another to get a sense of security about ourselves. We attach not only to physical things\, but also to ideas and opinions about ourselves and the world around us. Then we grow frustrated when the world doesn’t behave the way we think it should and our lives don’t conform to our expectations. The Buddha’s teachings on karma and rebirth are closely related to the Second Noble Truth. \n3. The truth of the end of suffering\nThe Buddha’s teachings on the Four Noble Truths are sometimes compared to a physician diagnosing an illness and prescribing a treatment. The first truth tells us what the illness is\, and the second truth tells us what causes the illness. The Third Noble Truth holds out hope for a cure. The Buddha taught that through diligent practice\, we can put an end to craving. Ending the hamster-wheel chase after satisfaction is enlightenment (bodhi\, “awakened”). The enlightened being exists in a state called Nirvana. \n4. The truth of the path that frees us from suffering\nHere the Buddha as physician prescribes the treatment for our illness: The Eightfold Path.Unlike in many other religions\, in Buddhism there is no particular benefit to merely believing in a doctrine. Instead\, the emphasis is on living the doctrine and walking the path.\nMore details about this holiday will follow.

SUMMARY:Relating to the Spiritual Teacher
DESCRIPTION:At Buddhist temples or dharma centers\, there are specific ways of understanding and showing respect for the sacred. For many new students\, the experience is at once beautiful and confusing\, even overwhelming. This is especially true in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, with its elaborate rituals\, chants\, and imagery. While some quickly dismiss this as Asian custom or cultural trapping\, irrelevant to Buddhists in the modern West\, “dharma etiquette” and Vajrayana iconography are actually important aspects of the path\, with special meaning and purpose that point to the essence of the dharma itself. Understanding these details deepens our practice and appreciation of the precious teachings of Buddha.  MDC sangha member Aaron Joseph (Pema Tsultrim) will offer a series of classes that provide a “guided tour” of our dharma center. Focusing on the “what” and “why” of etiquette and symbolism.  The classes are for those new to Buddhism\, as well as practitioners who are less familiar with the Tibetan system.   Join us on Saturdays after meditation for this special series.  \n1) Jan 20 – Dharma Etiquette # 1 ~ Inside the Shrine-Room/Temple: An introduction to common protocols in a Tibetan Buddhist center\, what they represent\, and how they are important aids to spiritual practice. \n2) Feb 3 – Understanding Tibetan Buddhist Symbolism # 1 ~ The Shrine: A basic overview of the arrangement and meaning of offerings and other objects commonly found on a Tibetan shrine. \n3) Feb 17 – Understanding Tibetan Buddhist Symbolism # 2 ~ Thangkas and Statues: A general explanation of the symbolism of Yidams (meditational deities)\, with special attention to those seen in the beautiful collection of thangkas (Vajrayana scroll paintings) and statues at MDC. \n4) Mar 3 – Dharma Etiquette # 2 ~ Relating to the Spiritual Teacher: The topics of the first three classes lead to an understanding of how to relate to our spiritual teacher (Tib. “lama\,” Skt. “guru”) and why the teacher-disciple relationship is so central to our tradition. \nAbout Aaron:  Aaron began practicing Buddhism in 2000. While earning his BA in Religious Studies at UC Santa Barbara\, he studied various traditions of Buddhism\, Tibetan and Sanskrit language\, and met his first Tibetan lamas. A former monk\, he is fortunate to have spent several years living very close to his teachers\, both in dharma centers in California and a monastery in India. He occasionally serves as an organizer\, teacher of children\, and chopen (shrine attendant) for Tibetan Buddhist retreats.

SUMMARY:Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche was the kind heart teacher of our own Khenpo Karten Rinpoche. On this special Monday\, we will remember the great kindness of Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche by telling his story and reciting experts from “Medicine for the Mind:  On Using Suffering and Obstacles for Mental Development.” Sangye Tenzin spent 21 years in Chinese prison\, yet he transformed the experience into pure spiritual food. We will recite special prayers for Sangye Tenzin composed by the Karmapa and Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, and discuss together how we can use this great example in our lives. Participants may bring flowers for the altar if they wish\, but simply participating is the best offering you can make as we honor this precious lineage.
