SUMMARY:Daylong Teaching Retreat "The Four Dharmas of Gampopa"
DESCRIPTION:Immediately after our regularly scheduled Saturday morning meditation session on June 8\, we will hold a day of teaching and meditation. \nOur teacher\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche will be giving an explanation of the “Four Dharmas of Gampopa”\, a prayer we frequently recite at MDC. This will be followed by a session of meditation in the afternoon\, and will be offered as a silent retreat to help focus the mind onto the importance of these teachings. \nGampopa\, the author of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, was the heart disciple of Milarepa and a revered practitioner and meditator in the Kagyu lineage. \nThis text by him\, “The Four Dharmas of Gampopa”\, succinctly offers a complete guide to practice for practitioners and leads us through the gradual path to liberation. This teaching is precious. This is a special opportunity. \nPlease bring a bag lunch to enjoy. Snacks and tea will be available throughout the day. \nSuggested donation: $40 for the general public\, $25 for students and those with limited income. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Public Talk: The Four Noble Truths
DESCRIPTION:July 16th\, 2018 marks the Tibetan holy day of Chokhor Duchen\, honoring the day that the Buddha Shakyamuni first taught the Four Noble Truths\, and first turned the wheel of the Dharma.  We will celebrate with a public talk on the Four Noble Truths given by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche and special prayers.  Please join us for this profound teaching on this very special occasion!  Free event\, but donations always appreciated.\n\n\nLearn More\nChokor Duchen Festival in Tibet is one of the four great seasonal festivals (Losar\, Saga Dawa\, Chokor Duchen and Lhabab Duchen) celebrated by all Tibetan Buddhists. During those times\, it is believed that the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied ten million times.\nChokhor means “Prayer Wheel” or “Dharma Wheel”\, the common religious objects in Tibet\, and Duchen means “great occasion” in Tibetan. Hand held wheels are hollow wooden or metal cylinders attached to a handle which when turned are believed to spread spiritual blessing. Mantras—such as Om Mani Padme Hum\, believed to invoke the attention and blessings of Chenrezig\, the Buddha of compassion—may be printed.\nTradition has it that Buddha was not convinced through his own reflections that teaching what he had discovered through his meditations would be of any benefit to others. It took the intercession of the great gods\, Brahma and Indra\, to persuade him to do so for the benefit of all sentient beings. The Buddha then addressed the five people who had been his companions during the time spent with the forest yogins concerning the Four Noble Truths:1. The truth of suffering\nThe First Noble Truth often is translated as “Life is suffering.” Many people new to Buddhism tune out as soon as they hear this. But the Pali word dukkhaalso refers to anything that is temporary\, conditional\, or compounded of other things. Even something precious and enjoyable is dukkha\, because it will end. Related to the nature of life is the nature of self. Are we not also temporary\, conditional and compounded of many parts? We can understand that life is impermanent but are we\, also\, impermanent? The Buddha taught that before we can understand life and death we must understand the self.2. The truth of the cause of suffering\nThe Second Noble Truth teaches that the cause of suffering is craving or thirst (tanha). We continually search for something outside ourselves to make us happy. But no matter how successful we are\, we never remain satisfied. The Buddha taught that this thirst grows from ignorance of the self. We go through life grabbing one thing after another to get a sense of security about ourselves. We attach not only to physical things\, but also to ideas and opinions about ourselves and the world around us. Then we grow frustrated when the world doesn’t behave the way we think it should and our lives don’t conform to our expectations. The Buddha’s teachings on karma and rebirth are closely related to the Second Noble Truth. \n3. The truth of the end of suffering\nThe Buddha’s teachings on the Four Noble Truths are sometimes compared to a physician diagnosing an illness and prescribing a treatment. The first truth tells us what the illness is\, and the second truth tells us what causes the illness. The Third Noble Truth holds out hope for a cure. The Buddha taught that through diligent practice\, we can put an end to craving. Ending the hamster-wheel chase after satisfaction is enlightenment (bodhi\, “awakened”). The enlightened being exists in a state called Nirvana. \n4. The truth of the path that frees us from suffering\nHere the Buddha as physician prescribes the treatment for our illness: The Eightfold Path.Unlike in many other religions\, in Buddhism there is no particular benefit to merely believing in a doctrine. Instead\, the emphasis is on living the doctrine and walking the path.\nMore details about this holiday will follow.

SUMMARY:Relating to the Spiritual Teacher
DESCRIPTION:At Buddhist temples or dharma centers\, there are specific ways of understanding and showing respect for the sacred. For many new students\, the experience is at once beautiful and confusing\, even overwhelming. This is especially true in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, with its elaborate rituals\, chants\, and imagery. While some quickly dismiss this as Asian custom or cultural trapping\, irrelevant to Buddhists in the modern West\, “dharma etiquette” and Vajrayana iconography are actually important aspects of the path\, with special meaning and purpose that point to the essence of the dharma itself. Understanding these details deepens our practice and appreciation of the precious teachings of Buddha.  MDC sangha member Aaron Joseph (Pema Tsultrim) will offer a series of classes that provide a “guided tour” of our dharma center. Focusing on the “what” and “why” of etiquette and symbolism.  The classes are for those new to Buddhism\, as well as practitioners who are less familiar with the Tibetan system.   Join us on Saturdays after meditation for this special series.  \n1) Jan 20 – Dharma Etiquette # 1 ~ Inside the Shrine-Room/Temple: An introduction to common protocols in a Tibetan Buddhist center\, what they represent\, and how they are important aids to spiritual practice. \n2) Feb 3 – Understanding Tibetan Buddhist Symbolism # 1 ~ The Shrine: A basic overview of the arrangement and meaning of offerings and other objects commonly found on a Tibetan shrine. \n3) Feb 17 – Understanding Tibetan Buddhist Symbolism # 2 ~ Thangkas and Statues: A general explanation of the symbolism of Yidams (meditational deities)\, with special attention to those seen in the beautiful collection of thangkas (Vajrayana scroll paintings) and statues at MDC. \n4) Mar 3 – Dharma Etiquette # 2 ~ Relating to the Spiritual Teacher: The topics of the first three classes lead to an understanding of how to relate to our spiritual teacher (Tib. “lama\,” Skt. “guru”) and why the teacher-disciple relationship is so central to our tradition. \nAbout Aaron:  Aaron began practicing Buddhism in 2000. While earning his BA in Religious Studies at UC Santa Barbara\, he studied various traditions of Buddhism\, Tibetan and Sanskrit language\, and met his first Tibetan lamas. A former monk\, he is fortunate to have spent several years living very close to his teachers\, both in dharma centers in California and a monastery in India. He occasionally serves as an organizer\, teacher of children\, and chopen (shrine attendant) for Tibetan Buddhist retreats.

SUMMARY:Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche was the kind heart teacher of our own Khenpo Karten Rinpoche. On this special Monday\, we will remember the great kindness of Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche by telling his story and reciting experts from “Medicine for the Mind:  On Using Suffering and Obstacles for Mental Development.” Sangye Tenzin spent 21 years in Chinese prison\, yet he transformed the experience into pure spiritual food. We will recite special prayers for Sangye Tenzin composed by the Karmapa and Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, and discuss together how we can use this great example in our lives. Participants may bring flowers for the altar if they wish\, but simply participating is the best offering you can make as we honor this precious lineage.

SUMMARY:Understanding Shrine Symbolism
\n2) Feb 10 – Understanding Tibetan Buddhist Symbolism # 1 ~ The Shrine: A basic overview of the arrangement and meaning of offerings and other objects commonly found on a Tibetan shrine.

The Tibetan word bardo means the intermediate state\, which is our state of existence before and after death. How to achieve happiness in this life with the first three bardos: Kyenay Bardo (the bardo of birth and life)\, Milam Bardo (the practice of dream yoga in the dream state) and Samten Bardo (the bardo of meditation or concentrative absorption); \n2. How to achieve peace at the moment of dying through the final three bardos: Chinkai Bardo (the bardo of dying at the moment of death until complete dissolution of outer and inner elements)\, Chonyi Bardo (luminosity of our true nature) and Sipa Bardo (the bardo of our new form which is determined by our karmic accumulations and actions). \nContact for questions:   TBA

SUMMARY:Public Talk: Developing the Supreme Good Heart
DESCRIPTION:“The tracks left by all Buddhas\, past\, present and future;  Quintessence of the 84\,000 Teachings are the instructions on altruistic Bodhicitta;  Don’t forget them.  Practice them!  That is my heart advice.”  page 9 Heartfelt Advice of Dharma Nectar\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche \nThe supreme good heart\, or Bodhicitta\, is a precious mind that cherishes all living beings over oneself–altruism in its deepest and broadest form.  As the Dalai Lama says in a 2015 video\, “Whoever generates this altruistic intention will find themselves setting out on the path to true happiness.”   Letting go of ego-clinging that seeks only the happiness of the self\, and developing a mind that wishes for the happiness of all creates peace of mind and joy for the practitioner.   The benefits of cultivating this attitude are profound: from better health and more harmonious relationships\, to the ultimate liberation of enlightenment.   Join Khenpo Karten Rinpoche as he teaches on the many benefits of Bodhicitta\, followed by a discussion on practical ways to gently encourage the supreme good heart in ourselves. \nThis teaching follows our regular meditation class\, held 10-11am on Saturdays. \nClick here for more information on the Heart Advice Series.

SUMMARY:Public Talk: Abandoning Dualistic Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Abandoning Dualistic Thinking\n Saturday\, March 25\n 11:15am-12:15pm  \n Manjushri Dharma Center\n“Samsara and nirvana are no more different than the two sides of a single hand.  Abandon dualistic discrimination;  Pure lands are nowhere else!   That is my heart advice.”  page 8 Heartfelt Advice of Dharma Nectar\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche \nIn the introduction to the The Jewel Ornament Of Liberation\, Gampopa (1074-1153) writes:  “In general\, all phenomena are included in the two categories of samsara and nirvana. That which is called samsara is empty by nature\, a confused projection. Its defining characteristic is that it manifests as suffering. That which is called nirvana is also empty by nature\, but all the confused projections are exhausted and dissipated. Its defining characteristic is freedom from all suffering….When can this confusion be transformed into primordial wisdom?  When one attains unsurpassable enlightenment.” \nOut of ignorance\, we tend to think of samsara and nirvana as two separate realities\, when actually they are of the same nature:  emptiness\, deep freedom and bliss.  It may take a lifetime or many lifetimes to achieve a direct realization of emptiness\, but with patient\, consistent\, gentle and joyful effort\, it is within reach. \nWe can relate to this teaching in another aspect.   Within our conventional reality we often judge people and experiences as good or bad\, pleasant or unpleasant\, and spend much energy trying to avoid the unpleasant\, seeking only the people and circumstances we enjoy.  What if we could experience others from a basis of curiosity\, openness\, and freedom of thought?  What if we viewed our lives and circumstances beyond the lens of habitual dualistic thinking? \nJoin us for a teaching from Khenpo Karten Rinpoche on this deep subject\, following our regular mediation practice (10-11am).  Rinpoche will teach directly in his own English.

SUMMARY:Public Talk: Love and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:“In the Buddhist tradition\, compassion and love are seen as two aspects of the same thing: Compassion is the wish for another being to be free from suffering; love is wanting them to have happiness.” (The Dalai Lama.Oct 5\, 2012)  In the west\, we tend to confuse love with attachment.  Love is other focused–the wish for the other to be happy.   Attachment is self focused–how the other makes the self feel.   Understanding the true nature of love and compassion & developing both qualities in ourselves can make relationships\, families\, and communities more harmonious.  Please join us for this very special public talk on love and compassion (just ahead of Valentine’s Day!) which will be taught both by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, resident monk and teacher at the Manjushri Dharma Center\, and by Geshe Lobsang Kanchok\, a monk and friend visiting from India.  Consecutive interpretation will be provided by Tibetan Buddhist language scholar and practitioner\, David Molk.\n\n\n\n\nSuggested donation of $10.00 welcome\, but no one turned away for lack of funds.  All are welcome!\n\nTalk begins at 11:15am after the Saturday meditation class.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Mind is King
DESCRIPTION:In Buddhist teachings\, the root of everything is the mind:  all happiness and all suffering arise from the mind.  No amount of massaging our external circumstances will lead to lasting happiness\, and no amount of avoiding unpleasant situations will shield us from suffering.   Happiness and suffering are states of mind\, therefore their causes are found within the mind.  If we train gently and consistently in the cultivation of love\, compassion\, acceptance\, patience\, forgiveness\, and so forth–these helpful states of mind will lead to lasting happiness\, even in the midst of difficult situations.   If we are slaves to habitual anger\, criticism\, blame\, jealousy and so forth–these unhelpful states of mind will lead to suffering\, even in midst of great material advantage.   Come and join us to learn how “mind is king.” \nThis class is part of a series of one-hour teachings given by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche based on his booklet “Heartfelt Advice of Dharma Nectar.”  The series will follow Saturday meditation sessions and serve as drop-in courses for anyone interested in practical ways to apply Dharma teachings to busy western life.  No registration required.   Suggested donation of $10.00\, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.  We hope you join us! \nQuestions\, contact:  Rachel Christopherson\, rachelMDC2016@gmail.com or 831-901-3156.
