SUMMARY:Daylong Teaching Retreat "The Four Dharmas of Gampopa"
DESCRIPTION:Immediately after our regularly scheduled Saturday morning meditation session on June 8\, we will hold a day of teaching and meditation. \nOur teacher\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche will be giving an explanation of the “Four Dharmas of Gampopa”\, a prayer we frequently recite at MDC. This will be followed by a session of meditation in the afternoon\, and will be offered as a silent retreat to help focus the mind onto the importance of these teachings. \nGampopa\, the author of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, was the heart disciple of Milarepa and a revered practitioner and meditator in the Kagyu lineage. \nThis text by him\, “The Four Dharmas of Gampopa”\, succinctly offers a complete guide to practice for practitioners and leads us through the gradual path to liberation. This teaching is precious. This is a special opportunity. \nPlease bring a bag lunch to enjoy. Snacks and tea will be available throughout the day. \nSuggested donation: $40 for the general public\, $25 for students and those with limited income. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Guest Teacher Speaking on Dzogchen
DESCRIPTION:We have the good fortune to have Geshe Dangsong Namgyal\, a Dzogchen master in the Bon lineage\, coming to MDC on Thursday\, May 23\, at 6:30 pm to speak to us about the practice of Dzogchen. This practice is a powerful way to see the mind as clear and peaceful. He describes it as “the meditator passes beyond mind and encounters the inconceivable vastness of the natural mind and ultimate truth.” \nGeshe Namgyal is a Rime teacher\, meaning one who embraces all of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Tibet\, came to India where he underwent 25 years of intense study to obtain his Geshe degree\, equivalent to our Western Ph.D. He is the author of works on Tibetan culture and religion\, has presented at numerous conferences throughout the world. He is the spiritual director for Kunsang Gar Meditation Center in Corralitos\, CA. He is author of the book Pure Dzogchen\, a collection of his teachings on the nature of mind. \nPlease let us welcome Geshe-la to our Center. Try not to miss this precious learning opportunity.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Heartfelt Advice of Dharma Nectar Practice Series
DESCRIPTION:A brand-new series begins on April 17\, 2019\, starting at 6:30 pm. This exciting addition to the MDC methods of learning the Dharma will involve an interactive discussion of\, “A Ship Sailing to Liberation\,” a commentary to the\, “Heartfelt Advice of Dharma Nectar\,” written by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche. Each session will consist of group reading of a section of the text followed by a moderated discussion of what that means to each of us\, along with offering ideas and examples of how we might put each teaching into practice in our daily lives. \nThis new practice series will offer each of us the opportunity to discuss and clarify different points of the Dharma while being held in a safe and non-judgmental space. It will provide a means of offering support to our own practice.  This is open to our entire sangha\, and any other persons interested in exploring the Dharma.  Bring a copy of the text if you have one. Extra copies will be available. \nDonations to the MDC in any amount are appreciated but not required.

SUMMARY:Excellent Path of Freedom\, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation in Brief
DESCRIPTION:The Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, also known as the Thargyen\, was originally composed by Ven. Gampopa (1079-1153)\, and presents all of Buddha’s 84\,000 teachings\, kindly organized into a step-by-step outline of the path to enlightenment. It is a foundational text in the Kagyu tradition. We are so fortunate that our resident lama Khenpo Karten Rinpoche has written a beautiful 80 verse distillation entitled Excellent Path of Freedom:  The Jewel Ornament of Liberation in Brief\, translated into English by Jampa Tharchin. As Rinpoche states in his colophon\, it was written: “so that future disciples could know how to put all of the Jewel Ornament of Liberation into practice\, day and night\, in daily life…” Please join us for this very special weekly series as Rinpoche give commentary and teachings on his 80 verse composition\, with consecutive interpretation kindly provided by Jampa Tharchin. \nThis is the last class in the series!

Gampopa (1079-1153) and presents in one text all of Buddha’s 84\,000 teachings.  It is a kind step-by-step outline of the path to enlightenment\, and a primary text in the Kagyu tradition.   The 2018 book club commentary is a teaching by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche\, given over four months specifically for a western audience.  The language is simple and the concepts are clearly presented.    Using this commentary and discussing how to put the teachings into practice in daily life\, we will be well-prepared to continue our study once Khenpo Karten Rinpoche returns to teach his beautiful 80-verse summary of this seminal work.   Details on the book club text and an outline of topics is below.  Even if you cannot read the chapters ahead\, the discussion of each topic will help us to better understand the path of Dharma.  Join us on Thursday evenings as we discuss the Jewel Ornament of Liberation. \nBook Club Book Details:\nJewel Ornament of Liberation\, commentary by:  Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche\, ISBN:  1-877294-27-6\nOriginally published in 2003\, updated 2014\, Namo Buddha Publications and Zhyisil Chokyi Ghatsal Trust Publications. \n \n  \n  \n  \nAvailable on Amazon (2014 update\, white cover) for roughly 30.00:\nhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/8120836987/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nAvailable from Namse Bangdzo Bookstore (2003 version\, gold cover) for roughly 40.00\nhttps://www.namsebangdzo.com/Je_Gampopa_s_The_Jewel_Ornament_of_Liberation_p/12086.htm \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDiscussion Topics:\nThursday\, January 4th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 1:  Buddha Nature\n\nThursday\, January 11th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 2:  Precious Human Life\n\nThursday\, January 18:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 3:  The Spiritual Friend\n\nThursday\, January 25:  No book club due to All-Sangha Meeting \nThursday\, February 1st:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 4:  Instructions on Impermanence\n\nThursday\, February 8th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 5:  The Suffering of Samsara\n\nThursday\, February 15th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 6:  Karma and Its Results\n\nThursday\, February 22nd:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 7:  Loving-kindness & Compassion\n\nThursday\, March 1st: 6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 8:  Refuge & Precepts\n\nThursday\, March 8th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 9:  Cultivation of Bodhichitta\n\nThursday\, March 15th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 10:  Training in Aspiring Bodhichitta\n\nThursday\, March 22nd:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 11:  Training in Action Bodhichitta\n\nThursday\, March 29nd:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 12:  The Perfection of Generosity\n\nNote:  Rinpoche returns on March 30th\, and we will ask his permission to continue our book club on Thursdays at the Center.  \nThursday\, April 5th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 13:  The Perfection of Moral Ethics\n\nThursday\, April 12th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 14:  The Perfection of Patience\n\nThursday\, April 19th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 15:  The Perfection of Diligence\n\nThursday\, April 26th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 16:  The Perfection of Meditative Concentration\n\nThursday\, May 3rd:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 17:  The Perfection of Wisdom-Awareness\n\nThursday\, May 10:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 18:  The Aspects of the Five Paths\n\nThursday\, May 17th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 19:  The Levels of the Path\n\nThursday\, May 24th:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 20:  Perfect Buddhahood\n\nThursday\, May 31st:  6:30-8:00pm\, Manjushri Dharma Center \n\nChapter 21:  Activities of the Buddha\n\n
