SUMMARY:Stone Soup for Our Sangha\, A Healing Ceremony for Manjushri Dharma Center
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us as we pray for healing among our Sangha Community and the World. We will come together in powerful guided meditation for healing our spirits\, followed by a nurturing “Stone Soup” lunch made by all of us.\nPlease arrive a bit early\, at 9:45 a.m.\, if you’d like to participate in sage smudging to cleanse our Dharma Center. Otherwise\, we’ll gather at 10 AM to jointly make our Stone Soup. Please bring chopped vegetables of your choice to add to a vegetarian broth. The soup will simmer during our ceremony to be ready for lunch. (To learn more about the traditional Stone Soup story\, check out this link! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Soup)\nFollowing our soup preparation\, Heidi Feldman\, founding MDC board member\, will briefly recount the history of the Dharma Center. Then MDC Program Coordinator Pema Tsultrim (Aaron Joseph) will offer a Tibetan healing practice for the Sangha. He received this practice from his root teacher\, who gave him permission to perform it for others with right motivation. Participants will be invited to sit or lie down comfortably (bring a shawl or small blanket if desired) and meditate or rest silently to receive the powerful healing blessings of the practice\, with its haunting melody and instrumentation.\nAfter the ceremony\, we will all gather to enjoy our Stone Soup.\nWe hope that many of our Sangha members can join us for this very special event. Rinpoche will be very happy to know that we have all come together in this meaningful ceremony. Please come and share in our community soup as we participate in this special ceremony to help with healing in this troubled world and within our own hearts.\nTo RSVP or if you have any questions about the event\, please call Heidi Feldman\nat 831/372-7873.

SUMMARY:A Public Teaching by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche on "The Four Seals of Buddhism"
DESCRIPTION:As Buddhism developed and spread throughout the world\, many distinct lineages and philosophical schools emerged. While the various Buddhist traditions differ widely in their prayers and practices\, they are all unified by a belief in the “Four Seals or Characteristics of Dharma”: \nImpermanence \nEmotions resulting in pain/suffering \nEmptiness or Selflessness \nEnlightenment that is beyond concepts \nIn this public talk\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, a very caring and compassionate teacher in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism\, will give a clear and accessible teaching on the meaning of the Four Seals and how to put an understanding of them into daily practice. \nWe invite you to take advantage of this special opportunity. Whether you are a Buddhist\, curious about Buddhism\, or have an interest in comparative religions\, this program will be very insightful and beneficial. \nKhenpo Karten Rinpoche was born in Nangchen\, East Tibet\, and received a traditional monastic education at several of Asia’s greatest Buddhist training centers. He suffered many hardships with the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Upon his escape to India\, Rinpoche was subsequently authorized by the Dalai Lama to come to the West and teach the Dharma. Rinpoche has groups of students in Europe\, Asia\, and North America\, and currently is the Spiritual Director at the Manjushri Dharma Center in Pacific Grove\, CA. \nSuggested donation: $20 \nAll are welcome to attend regardless of ability to make a donation.

SUMMARY:Saga Dawa Duchen\, "Great Occasion"
DESCRIPTION:This is the most important time of the Tibetan Buddhist year\, the 4th month of the lunar calendar. Saga is the name of the most visible star during the month and Dawa means month. It is during this special time that we celebrate the Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth\, enlightenment and parinirvana. \nDuring these days the merits of all of our positive\, virtuous actions of body\, speech and mind are greatly multiplied. This is also a time when any non-virtuous thoughts\, words and actions generate much negative karma. \nIn 2019\, Saga Dawa runs from June 4 to July 2. The 15th day of this lunar month\, Monday\, June 17\, is known as Saga Dawa Duchen which means “great occasion”. This is the single most important and auspicious day in all of Tibetan Buddhism where the merit of our positive karmic actions are multiplied 100\,000 times. MDC will celebrate this day with an Amitabha tsok offering beginning at 6:30 pm. \nA beneficial opportunity during this special month might be the motivation for all of us to renew or re-energize our practice. During this time\, one might do such practices as committing to reading a Buddhist book on a topic you have wanted to explore in more depth\, spending a bit more time each day on your meditation cushion\, and trying ways in which you can express more kindness and compassion for all beings around you. Specific activities that create much merit during this month include: visiting a local temple (such as MDC)\, making a generous donation offering\, and performing volunteer services for the Manjushri Dharma Center or another organization of your choice. \nStepping up your activities by creating a more structured practice period for yourself during this month will result in the creation of great merit\, benefiting yourself and others. Please don’t miss this opportunity to advance your practice during the most auspicious month of the entire Tibetan year. And we hope to see you at the Saga Dawa Duchen celebration on June 17.

SUMMARY:Daylong Teaching Retreat "The Four Dharmas of Gampopa"
DESCRIPTION:Immediately after our regularly scheduled Saturday morning meditation session on June 8\, we will hold a day of teaching and meditation. \nOur teacher\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche will be giving an explanation of the “Four Dharmas of Gampopa”\, a prayer we frequently recite at MDC. This will be followed by a session of meditation in the afternoon\, and will be offered as a silent retreat to help focus the mind onto the importance of these teachings. \nGampopa\, the author of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, was the heart disciple of Milarepa and a revered practitioner and meditator in the Kagyu lineage. \nThis text by him\, “The Four Dharmas of Gampopa”\, succinctly offers a complete guide to practice for practitioners and leads us through the gradual path to liberation. This teaching is precious. This is a special opportunity. \nPlease bring a bag lunch to enjoy. Snacks and tea will be available throughout the day. \nSuggested donation: $40 for the general public\, $25 for students and those with limited income. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche was the kind heart teacher of our own Khenpo Karten Rinpoche. On this special Wednesday\, following a brief Thargyen class teaching and in solidarity with KK Rinpoche’s home monastery in Tibet\, we will remember the great kindness of Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche. Sangye Tenzin spent 21 years in Chinese prison\, yet he transformed the experience into pure spiritual food\, and left with only good wishes for his captors. We will recite special prayers for Sangye Tenzin (Guru Yoga) composed by the Karmapa and Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, and reflect together on how we can use this great example in our lives. Participants may bring flowers for the altar if they wish\, but simply participating is the best offering you can make as we honor this precious lineage. \nLearn More about Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche: “Medicine for the Mind:  On Using Suffering and Obstacles for Mental Development.”

To fly a Tibetan flag\, send an email abroad\, or say the phrase “human rights\,” is cause for imprisonment and torture. 99% of all Tibetan monasteries have been closed. The Tibetan people and their culture are being systematically attacked.  Our own teacher\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche risked his life to become a monk in Tibet before fleeing in 1996. Stand up against this repression and violence.  Lend your voice to peace\, justice\, and freedom:  Support Tibet!  Join us on Saturday\, March 10th\, 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Windows on the Bay as we join international protests in support of Tibetan freedom. Signs provided. Please note: Protesters cannot step into the street or hand out leaflets to cars\, as per a city safety mandate. \n“Imagine you are not allowed to whistle ‘Yankee  Doodle’  as  you  work.  You  can’t  talk  about  the  day’s  events  in  your  native  language\,  nor  wear  blue  jeans  and  tennis shoes\, or any other garment quintessentially American. Your children go to a new school where  they  learn  a  language  other  than  yours\, and are taught to report you to the authorities  if  you  speak  English  at  home.  Forget going to church.  This is Tibet today.” quote from 2016 article in Cedar St. Times. \n\nLearn more about the issue:\nFree Tibet website\n2016 PG Cedar Street Times article (bottom of p1\, includes photos of Rinpoche during his trek across the Himalayas)\nVideo: Tibet Today

SUMMARY:Monday Night Chanted Prayers
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special Monday evening when Rinpoche leads us in the chanted prayers of Medicine Buddha (Buddha of Infinite Healing). He is a Buddha Doctor\, depicted as having a dark blue (lapis lazuli) colored body\, this being an archetypal color of healing.  With his left hand he holds a bowl of healing nectars\, and with his right\, a medicine plant. Beginners to advanced practitioners are welcome\, prayer books are provided. Free of charge\, but donations are welcome.

SUMMARY:Riwo Sangchod Fire Puja Conducted by Chamtrul Rinpoche
DESCRIPTION:Khenpo Karten Rinpoche has invited his friend Chamtrul Rinpoche Lobsang Gyatso to Manjushri Dharma Center to give teachings and lead practices from Aug 20-22. Chamtrul Rinpoche will conduct a Riwo Sangchod Fire Puja on August 21 at 10:00 AM.\n\nRiwo Sangchod (“The Mountain of Burnt Offerings”)\, a term (revealed treasure) of Lhatsun Namkha Jigmed\, is a fire puja\, or smoke offering ceremony. Visualizing ourselves in the form of Guru Padmasambhava\, we recite his mantra and offer an array of aromatic and nourishing substances that have been consecrated\, such as incense\, medicinal plants and herbs\, the three whites and the three sweets (milk\, butter\, yogurt\, sugar\, honey and molasses) into a fire\, the smoke from which is offered to the Three Jewels (Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha)\, the Three Roots (Lamas\, Yidams\, and Dakinis)\, as well as to the hosts of sentient beings of the six realms. The practice of Riwo Sangchod is a powerful skillful method of paying back karmic debts to beings we have harmed in the past\, restoring broken precepts\, averting obstacles and negative influences\, and balancing and harmonizing the physical elements to pacify the subtle forces that causes natural disasters.\n\n\nAbout Chamtrul Rinpoche Lobsang Gyatso\nChamtrul Rinpoche is the recognized third incarnation of a great master of the Kathog lineage of the Nyingma Order of Tibetan Buddhism. Born in Golok\, East Tibet\, he receive monastc education and training\, first at the great Kathog Monastery (the oldest of the “Six Mother Monasteries” of Nyingma)\, and then at Sertha Larung Gar Five Sciences Buddhist Academy in Kham\, East Tibet\, renowned as the largest Buddhist monastic center in the world. There\, Chamtrul Rinpoche met and received the title of Khenpo from his Root Guru\, the non-sectarian Dzogchen master and Treasure Revealer Khenpo Jigmed Phuntsok Jungne\, one of the most beloved and revered masters of the 20th century. He was enthroned again as a Khenpo at Kathok Monastery. Chamtrul Rinpoche later settled in Dharamsala\, India and began giving teachings to many international students for over 10 years\, with his excellent command of the English language. Rinpoche founded Bodhicitta Centers to unite sangha around the world who study under his guidance.\n\nWe are very fortunate to be able to receive sacred Dharma teachings from such a highly qualified and respected master\, and that our precious teacher Khenpo Karten Rinpoche is making it possible for us to connect with Chamtrul Rinpoche’s wisdom body\, speech and mind.

SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse\, Special Prayers of Kuntuzangpo
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 11th\, there will be a partial solar eclipse at 1:02am Pacific Standard Time\, visible from northern and eastern Europe\, and northern parts of North America.  Such days are significant in the Tibetan tradition as “merit multiplier days\,” meaning that our intentions and actions are amplified by countless millions.  Practitioners are encouraged to set positive intentions and to act in accordance with love and compassion with special focus on this day.   After our regular meditation practice\, Rinpoche will lead us in the prayer called the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo (Tib. ཀུན་བཟང་སྨོན་ལམ་\, Kunzang Mönlam) — a famous Dzogchen aspiration prayer recited especially during a solar or lunar eclipse\, an earthquake or at the solstices.   Join us for this very meritorious prayer practice!

SUMMARY:Tibetan Uprising Day
DESCRIPTION:Since the Chinese occupation in 1959\, more than one million Tibetans have been killed. Times. \n\nLearn more about the issue:\nFree Tibet website\n2016 PG Cedar Street Times article (bottom of p1\, includes photos of Rinpoche during his trek across the Himalayas)\nVideo: Tibet Today \n\n\n\n \nUpdate: Notes From The Day\nThank you to all who came out to represent the Monterey Bay on the International Day of Action\, Tibetan Uprising Day\, Saturday\, March 10\, 2018. We were small but mighty\, and joined hundreds of thousands of others worldwide to demand human rights and dignity for a free Tibet.  \n\n\nWhat can you do? There are three postcards with specific requests you can make available at the Center through the month of March.   Fill one out (or all three!) and we will mail them at the end of the month. \n\n\nACTION #1 \nSend a postcard to John W. Henry\, owner of the Liverpool Football Club to protest their sponsorship deal with Tibet Water Resources Limited\, a company using water as a weapon in Tibet \nTibet Water Resources Limited (TWRL) exploits the natural resources of Tibet\, a country that has been under brutal military occupation for nearly 70 years. Now one of the world’s biggest football teams\, Liverpool FC\, have signed a sponsorship deal with them. Companies like TWRL are only able to take Tibet’s resources because of the occupation\, an occupation propped up by repression and human rights abuses. Its brand — and now Liverpool FC — lend legitimacy to the occupation and the accompanying violence and repression. The Chinese government knows it can only continue to get away with repression in Tibet if its occupation has legitimacy. And associating Tibet with major global brands like Liverpool FC is a great way to normalize the brutal situation. Premier League clubs have never been richer\, with Liverpool receiving over £148m from TV and prize money last year. The club has also just returned to the Champions League\, earning them tens of millions more — they can easily afford to drop this reckless deal. \nSend an email to Owner John Henry and the Liverpool Football Club via the Free Tibet website: https://freetibet.co.uk/liverpool-fc  \nLiverpool Football Club\nAnfield Road\nLiverpool\nL4 OTH\, ENGLAND \nACTION #2 \nSend a postcard to the U.S. Embassy in Chinain support of Tashi Wangchuk\, a young man speaking up for Tibetan language \nTashi Wangchuk is from Yushu in eastern Tibet. He became an advocate for the teaching of the Tibetan language after Tibetan classes were closed down in his local area\, prompting concerns that future generations of Tibetans would grow up unable to speak their mother tongue. His attempts to persuade the local government to provide Tibetan language information in schools were featured in an article and documentary in the New York Times in November 2015. Tashi Wangchuk pursued his campaign peacefully through official channels. He repeatedly maintained that his actions were not political. Two months later he was arrested\, and later charged with “inciting separatism”. It is likely he is being punished because he had the courage to work with the New York Times to highlight threats to Tibetan culture\, despite the risk he would be arrested. \nSend an email in support of Tashi Wangchuk via the Free Tibet website: https://www.freetibet.org/take-action \nSend a postcard to the U.S. Embassy in China \nUnited States Embassy of Beijing\, China\nAmbassador Terry Branstad\nNo. 55 An Jia Lou Lu\nPeople’s Republic of China\, 100600 \nACTION #3 \nSend a postcard to the Chinese Embassy in the US to protest the destruction of Larang Gar\, one of the largest Buddhist centers in the world \nLarang Gar at one point was home to 40\,000 monks and nuns\, one of the largest religious centers in the world. The first round of demolitions and removals\, carried out in July of 2017\, reduced large areas of the site to rubble and caused widespread distress among Tibetans. Residents who have been removed from the site have been made to sign pledges promising not to return to live there. Others have been locked out of their own homes. Monks and nuns who have been returned to their native regions from Larung Gar have been prevented from joining new monasteries and nunneries. Some have been subjected to humiliating patriotic re-education sessions\, in which they are required to sing Chinese propaganda songs and denounce their own Tibetan culture and religion. The sadness has been felt across Tibet\, and inside Larung Gar\, three nuns are reported to have taken their own lives in protest against the demolitions. This damage is not just an assault on Larung Gar and its residents\, but also on Tibetans’ fundamental rights\, including the rights to freedom of religion\, freedom of movement and freedom of expression and association. \nSend an email to Chinese Embassy in the US via the Free Tibet website: https://freetibet.org/urgent-action-larung-gar-buddhist-academy \nSend a postcard to the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. \nChinese Embassy in United States\n3505 International Place\, N.W.\nWashington\, D.C. 20008 \n

SUMMARY:Chötrul Düchen Full Moon Celebration of Miracles
DESCRIPTION:Chötrul Düchen is one of four major Tibetan Buddhist holy days\, celebrated on the first full moon after lunar new year.   It is known as the Butter Lamp Festival\, Festival of Lights\, or Great Day of Miraculous Manifestations.  It commemorates the day that Buddha Shakyamuni settled the question of his enlightenment with naysayers by performing many miracles.  This full moon day is considered a “merit multiplier” day\, with the effects of both positive and negative actions multiplied ten million times.   On this auspicious day\, we will gather to read the Heart Sutra\, Praise of the Twelve Great Deeds\, and Praise of Buddha Shakyamuni.   Participants may bring flowers\, electric candles or battery-operated lights to add to the alter (no real candles please).  We hope to see you there! \nTraditionally\, artistic butter lamps are prepared in the first fifteen days after lunar new year and great displays of light are lit on the full moon celebration of Chötrul Düchen\, however in Rinpoche’s absence\, we have agreed to not light real candles at the center\, so will substitute with electric lights.  In closing our Chötrul Düchen celebration we will read a long-life prayer for Rinpoche.  We hope to see you there! \nLearn More: The Story of the 15 Days of Miracles\, Rigpa Wiki-Brief Explanation of Chotrul Duchen \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Special Lunar Eclipse Prayers
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 31st is a very special day:  a blue moon (second full moon in month)\, a super moon (closest to earth this year) and a lunar eclipse (starts at roughly 3am and reaches maximum roughly 5:30am).  We learned from Rinpoche that eclipse days and special astronomical events such as this are energetically and spiritually significant.  Wednesday should be considered a “merit multiplier day\,” meaning that our intentions and actions are amplified by countless millions\, so practitioners are encouraged to set positive intentions and to act in accordance with love and compassion with special focus on this day.   Aaron Joseph (Pema Tsultrim) will lead us in the prayers of Avalokiteshvara/Chenrezig\, the Buddha of Infinite Compassion\, wishing freedom from suffering for all sentient beings.  In addition\, we will recite a special prayer called the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo  — a famous Dzogchen aspiration prayer to be recited especially during a solar or lunar eclipse\, or at the solstices.   Join us for this very meritorious night!     Free of charge\, but donations are welcome. \nMore about the special prayers: the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo (Tib. ཀུན་བཟང་སྨོན་ལམ་\, Kunzang Mönlam) — is a famous Dzogchen aspiration prayer from the Gongpa Zangthal. It is to be recited especially during a solar or lunar eclipse\, an earthquake or at the solstices. This aspiration prayer comes from the Dzogchen tantra called the Tantra of the Great Perfection which Shows the Penetrating Wisdom of Samantabhadra. In Tibetan\, the short title of this tantra is Gongpa Zangthal Gyi Gyü\, which means “The Tantra of Penetrating Wisdom” or “The Tantra of Transcendent Intention.” \nRead the full text:  Prayer of Kuntuzangpo \nMore about viewing the lunar eclipse in the Monterey area:  https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/monterey \n
