SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse\, Special Prayers of Kuntuzangpo
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 11th\, there will be a partial solar eclipse at 1:02am Pacific Standard Time\, visible from northern and eastern Europe\, and northern parts of North America.  Such days are significant in the Tibetan tradition as “merit multiplier days\,” meaning that our intentions and actions are amplified by countless millions.  Practitioners are encouraged to set positive intentions and to act in accordance with love and compassion with special focus on this day.   After our regular meditation practice\, Rinpoche will lead us in the prayer called the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo (Tib. ཀུན་བཟང་སྨོན་ལམ་\, Kunzang Mönlam) — a famous Dzogchen aspiration prayer recited especially during a solar or lunar eclipse\, an earthquake or at the solstices.   Join us for this very meritorious prayer practice!

SUMMARY:Saga Dawa
DESCRIPTION:Saga Dawa observations take place in the fourth Tibetan month\, honoring Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth\, enlightenment\, and parinirvana. For the whole period\, positive actions are multiplied 100\,000 times\, so practitioners are encouraged to practice Dharma and positive actions as much as possible during this time\, and to refrain from harmful actions with extra mindfulness. Most holy of all is the full moon day of Saga Dawa\, the 15th day of the Tibetan month\, which will fall on Tuesday\, May 29th.   \nPlease join us for an Amitabha Tsog Offering Puja to observe this auspicious occasion. Attendees are requested to bring tsog offerings like flowers\, fruits\, biscuits\, cheese/crackers\, nuts\, etc.  We will arrange a beautiful offering of food and flowers for the Guru\, the Three Jewels\, and the Assembly of Heroes and Heroines\, and we partake in the offerings to honor the divine within.  It is a beautiful practice to accumulate merit and purify obscurations. Prayers will be provided and all are welcome!

SUMMARY:Welcome Home Rinpoche
DESCRIPTION:Update: Rinpoche’s flight arrived early and he is back\, recuperating from his long travels now. We will let him rest now and we look forward to seeing him soon. \nOriginal Post: After a three month trip to India\, Singapore\, and Malaysia where Rinpoche received teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, was joyfully reunited with his family and friends\, and where he taught Dharma to his students in these beautiful parts of the world\, we are so happy to announce that our kind teacher\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, will return home on Sunday\, April 8th\, flying into San Francisco at roughly 10:00 AM.  The community is invited to gather at the Manjushri Dharma Center to welcome back our teacher with warmth and enthusiasm. We will line up upon his arrival and present katas: white\, ceremonial scarves that are a sign of respect and symbolic blessings. Participants are encouraged to bring offerings such as flowers for the alter\, fruits\, vegetables\, or healthy\, homemade meals to stock Rinpoche’s refrigerator. (No sugary sweets please). Participants may also bring snacks for the community to enjoy while we await Rinpoche’s arrival\, which will be sometime between noon and 1:30 PM approximately. Come enjoy visiting together and help to welcome home Rinpoche!

SUMMARY:Tibetan Uprising Day
DESCRIPTION:Since the Chinese occupation in 1959\, more than one million Tibetans have been killed. To fly a Tibetan flag\, send an email abroad\, or say the phrase “human rights\,” is cause for imprisonment and torture. 99% of all Tibetan monasteries have been closed. The Tibetan people and their culture are being systematically attacked.  Our own teacher\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche risked his life to become a monk in Tibet before fleeing in 1996. Stand up against this repression and violence.  Lend your voice to peace\, justice\, and freedom:  Support Tibet!  Join us on Saturday\, March 10th\, 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Windows on the Bay as we join international protests in support of Tibetan freedom. Signs provided. Please note: Protesters cannot step into the street or hand out leaflets to cars\, as per a city safety mandate. \n“Imagine you are not allowed to whistle ‘Yankee  Doodle’  as  you  work.  You  can’t  talk  about  the  day’s  events  in  your  native  language\,  nor  wear  blue  jeans  and  tennis shoes\, or any other garment quintessentially American. Your children go to a new school where  they  learn  a  language  other  than  yours\, and are taught to report you to the authorities  if  you  speak  English  at  home.  Forget going to church.  This is Tibet today.” quote from 2016 article in Cedar St. Times. \n\nLearn more about the issue:\nFree Tibet website\n2016 PG Cedar Street Times article (bottom of p1\, includes photos of Rinpoche during his trek across the Himalayas)\nVideo: Tibet Today \n\n\n\n \nUpdate: Notes From The Day\nThank you to all who came out to represent the Monterey Bay on the International Day of Action\, Tibetan Uprising Day\, Saturday\, March 10\, 2018. We were small but mighty\, and joined hundreds of thousands of others worldwide to demand human rights and dignity for a free Tibet.  \n\n\nWhat can you do? There are three postcards with specific requests you can make available at the Center through the month of March.   Fill one out (or all three!) and we will mail them at the end of the month. \n\n\nACTION #1 \nSend a postcard to John W. Henry\, owner of the Liverpool Football Club to protest their sponsorship deal with Tibet Water Resources Limited\, a company using water as a weapon in Tibet \nTibet Water Resources Limited (TWRL) exploits the natural resources of Tibet\, a country that has been under brutal military occupation for nearly 70 years. Now one of the world’s biggest football teams\, Liverpool FC\, have signed a sponsorship deal with them. Companies like TWRL are only able to take Tibet’s resources because of the occupation\, an occupation propped up by repression and human rights abuses. Its brand — and now Liverpool FC — lend legitimacy to the occupation and the accompanying violence and repression. The Chinese government knows it can only continue to get away with repression in Tibet if its occupation has legitimacy. And associating Tibet with major global brands like Liverpool FC is a great way to normalize the brutal situation. Premier League clubs have never been richer\, with Liverpool receiving over £148m from TV and prize money last year. The club has also just returned to the Champions League\, earning them tens of millions more — they can easily afford to drop this reckless deal. \nSend an email to Owner John Henry and the Liverpool Football Club via the Free Tibet website: https://freetibet.co.uk/liverpool-fc  \nLiverpool Football Club\nAnfield Road\nLiverpool\nL4 OTH\, ENGLAND \nACTION #2 \nSend a postcard to the U.S. Embassy in Chinain support of Tashi Wangchuk\, a young man speaking up for Tibetan language \nTashi Wangchuk is from Yushu in eastern Tibet. He became an advocate for the teaching of the Tibetan language after Tibetan classes were closed down in his local area\, prompting concerns that future generations of Tibetans would grow up unable to speak their mother tongue. His attempts to persuade the local government to provide Tibetan language information in schools were featured in an article and documentary in the New York Times in November 2015. Tashi Wangchuk pursued his campaign peacefully through official channels. He repeatedly maintained that his actions were not political. Two months later he was arrested\, and later charged with “inciting separatism”. It is likely he is being punished because he had the courage to work with the New York Times to highlight threats to Tibetan culture\, despite the risk he would be arrested. \nSend an email in support of Tashi Wangchuk via the Free Tibet website: https://www.freetibet.org/take-action \nSend a postcard to the U.S. Embassy in China \nUnited States Embassy of Beijing\, China\nAmbassador Terry Branstad\nNo. 55 An Jia Lou Lu\nPeople’s Republic of China\, 100600 \nACTION #3 \nSend a postcard to the Chinese Embassy in the US to protest the destruction of Larang Gar\, one of the largest Buddhist centers in the world \nLarang Gar at one point was home to 40\,000 monks and nuns\, one of the largest religious centers in the world. The first round of demolitions and removals\, carried out in July of 2017\, reduced large areas of the site to rubble and caused widespread distress among Tibetans. Residents who have been removed from the site have been made to sign pledges promising not to return to live there. Others have been locked out of their own homes. Monks and nuns who have been returned to their native regions from Larung Gar have been prevented from joining new monasteries and nunneries. Some have been subjected to humiliating patriotic re-education sessions\, in which they are required to sing Chinese propaganda songs and denounce their own Tibetan culture and religion. The sadness has been felt across Tibet\, and inside Larung Gar\, three nuns are reported to have taken their own lives in protest against the demolitions. This damage is not just an assault on Larung Gar and its residents\, but also on Tibetans’ fundamental rights\, including the rights to freedom of religion\, freedom of movement and freedom of expression and association. \nSend an email to Chinese Embassy in the US via the Free Tibet website: https://freetibet.org/urgent-action-larung-gar-buddhist-academy \nSend a postcard to the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. \nChinese Embassy in United States\n3505 International Place\, N.W.\nWashington\, D.C. 20008 \n

SUMMARY:Chötrul Düchen Full Moon Celebration of Miracles
DESCRIPTION:Chötrul Düchen is one of four major Tibetan Buddhist holy days\, celebrated on the first full moon after lunar new year.   It is known as the Butter Lamp Festival\, Festival of Lights\, or Great Day of Miraculous Manifestations.  It commemorates the day that Buddha Shakyamuni settled the question of his enlightenment with naysayers by performing many miracles.  This full moon day is considered a “merit multiplier” day\, with the effects of both positive and negative actions multiplied ten million times.   On this auspicious day\, we will gather to read the Heart Sutra\, Praise of the Twelve Great Deeds\, and Praise of Buddha Shakyamuni.   Participants may bring flowers\, electric candles or battery-operated lights to add to the alter (no real candles please).  We hope to see you there! \nTraditionally\, artistic butter lamps are prepared in the first fifteen days after lunar new year and great displays of light are lit on the full moon celebration of Chötrul Düchen\, however in Rinpoche’s absence\, we have agreed to not light real candles at the center\, so will substitute with electric lights.  In closing our Chötrul Düchen celebration we will read a long-life prayer for Rinpoche.  We hope to see you there! \nLearn More: The Story of the 15 Days of Miracles\, Rigpa Wiki-Brief Explanation of Chotrul Duchen \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Special Lunar Eclipse Prayers
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 31st is a very special day:  a blue moon (second full moon in month)\, a super moon (closest to earth this year) and a lunar eclipse (starts at roughly 3am and reaches maximum roughly 5:30am).  We learned from Rinpoche that eclipse days and special astronomical events such as this are energetically and spiritually significant.  Wednesday should be considered a “merit multiplier day\,” meaning that our intentions and actions are amplified by countless millions\, so practitioners are encouraged to set positive intentions and to act in accordance with love and compassion with special focus on this day.   Aaron Joseph (Pema Tsultrim) will lead us in the prayers of Avalokiteshvara/Chenrezig\, the Buddha of Infinite Compassion\, wishing freedom from suffering for all sentient beings.  In addition\, we will recite a special prayer called the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo  — a famous Dzogchen aspiration prayer to be recited especially during a solar or lunar eclipse\, or at the solstices.   Join us for this very meritorious night!     Free of charge\, but donations are welcome. \nMore about the special prayers: the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo (Tib. ཀུན་བཟང་སྨོན་ལམ་\, Kunzang Mönlam) — is a famous Dzogchen aspiration prayer from the Gongpa Zangthal. It is to be recited especially during a solar or lunar eclipse\, an earthquake or at the solstices. This aspiration prayer comes from the Dzogchen tantra called the Tantra of the Great Perfection which Shows the Penetrating Wisdom of Samantabhadra. In Tibetan\, the short title of this tantra is Gongpa Zangthal Gyi Gyü\, which means “The Tantra of Penetrating Wisdom” or “The Tantra of Transcendent Intention.” \nRead the full text:  Prayer of Kuntuzangpo \nMore about viewing the lunar eclipse in the Monterey area:  https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/monterey \n

SUMMARY:Heart Transmission of Rinpoche's Jewel Ornament of Liberation Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Khenpo Karten Rinpoche has written a beautiful 80 verse teaching on the Jewel Ornament of Liberation\, translated into English by Jampa Tharchin in early November. As Rinpoche states in his colophon\, it was written: “so that future disciples could know how to put all of the Jewel Ornament of Liberation into practice\, day and night\, in daily life…” Please join us for a heart transmission of his teaching after meditation class on Saturday\, December 23.   Rinpoche will recite the verses in his native Tibetan from his heart with special intention\, and listeners will receive it with special intention. We will also recite Rinpoche’s writing\, “Heartfelt Advice of Dharma Nectar.” If you can’t make it on this busy holiday weekend\, not to worry\, Rinpoche will offer a second heart transmission when he returns from his trip to India along with further classes and instruction.

SUMMARY:Lhabab Duchen 2017
DESCRIPTION:Lhabab Düchen is one of the four Buddhist festivals commemorating four events in the life of the Buddha\, according to Tibetan traditions. Lhabab Düchen occurs on the 22nd day of the ninth lunar month according to Tibetan calendar.  (That falls on Friday\, November 10th in 2017) \nLhabab Düchen celebrates Buddha’s descent from The Heaven of Thirty-Three back to earth.  Buddha had left for The Heaven Of Thirty-Three (Trayastrimsa) at the age of 41\, in order to give teachings to benefit the gods in that desire realm\, and to repay the kindness of his mother by liberating her from Samsara.  He was exhorted by his follower and representative Maudgalyayana to return\, and after a long debate and under a Full Moon agreed to return. He returned to earth a week later by a special triple ladder prepared by Viswakarma\, the god of machines. This event is considered to be one of the eight great deeds of the Buddha. \nOn Lhabab Düchen\, the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied ten million times. It is part of Tibetan Buddhist tradition to engage in virtuous activities and prayer on this day. \nTo celebrate Lhabab Düchen we will recite the prayers of Buddha Shakyamuni (depicted above) and practice Guru Yoga\, reciting prayers for Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche (shown left)\, the root guru of Khenpo Karten Rinpoche.  Rinpoche will provide us with copies of the prayers and guide us in this ceremony.    Donations are welcome\, but there is no fee for this practice.  We hope to see you there! \nSource for above information:  Wikipedia \n  \n  \nPhoto of Altar and Texts from Ceremony: \n \n  \nCalling the Guru from Afar \nShakyamuni Prayer \nPraise of 12 great deeds \n#.Final.Prayer to Japa Sangye Tenzin

SUMMARY:One Day Retreat: Purification & Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Summary of the Day\nOn September 23rd\, we held a one-day retreat in the mountains above Carmel Valley at Grace Sanctuary\,  a private property overlooking the Ventana Wilderness. \nIn the morning Rinpoche performed a Fire Puja outdoors. A Fire Puja is a powerful purification practice to help eliminate negativities and obstacles to enlightenment such as ordinary appearances\, unwholesome actions and broken pledges\, promises and vows.  Fire Puja is also used for promoting healing\, restoration\, and long-life.   Rinpoche guided us in our practice and visualization\, leading us in prayers of healing for ourselves\, our world\, and especially for the land\, creatures\, and people affected by the recent Soberanes fire.  The text we used was the Riwo Sangchö (Sang Offering). The practice of Riwo Sangchö\, the Mengak\, ‘secret instructions\,’ is from Lhatsün Jikme’s Rigdzin Sokdrup’\, as arranged by Dudjom Rinpoche. \nThe afternoon found us in the beautiful 30’ yurt\, where Rinpoche did a detailed teaching on The Nine Instructions for Concentration Meditation. Many questions were asked and answered about different mediation experiences. \nThe weather was beautiful\, and Rinpoche and the many retreatants were very happy with the event. As Rinpoche wrote in his poem\, Showing the Path to Liberation\, An Exhortation to Seek Isolated Places\, \nIf you are disillusioned with the cities of samsara \nChasms of attachment\, aversion\, and bad karma\, \nGo to a perfect isolated place \nFor good paths lit with peace and happiness. \nWell\, we certainly found that place\, and the spirits of the land were very happy with our offerings! \nPhotos from the Day\nSet up crew! Steve on far left\, and Edy on far right are the owners of Grace Sanctuary. \nSet up crew: Shayna\, Rachel\, Cindy and Diana were the main crew. \nRinpoche and the beautiful Ventana wilderness \n \nAs we were settling in before the morning session\, sunlight came through the yurt opening\, shining directly on the Amitabha thangka in the center of the alter! \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nPPPPPPP\nP\nP\nPP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\nP\n \n\nInitial Retreat Information\nBrief Description of Teaching\nOn Saturday\, September 23rd\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche will lead a one day retreat including a morning purification practice called a Fire Puja\,  and an afternoon teaching on The Nine Instructions for Concentration Meditation. \nAbout the Fire Puja:  All of us have obstacles to enlightenment\, delusions\, that keep us in the cycle of suffering without end.  A Fire Puja is a powerful purification practice to help eliminate negativities and obstacles to enlightenment such as ordinary appearances\, unwholesome actions and broken pledges\, promises and vows.  Fire Puja is also used for promoting healing\, restoration\, and long-life.   Rinpoche will guide us in our practice and visualization\, leading us in prayers of healing for ourselves\, our world\, and especially for the land\, creatures\, and people affected by the recent Soberanes fire.   Participants are encouraged to wear white clothing to support the intention of purification\, but this is not a requirement.   Participants are encouraged to eat a vegetarian diet on this day\, but again this is voluntary. \nAbout the Nine Instructions for Concentration Meditation:  In his regular Saturday meditation classes\, Rinpoche teaches Shamatha meditation\, or that of quieting the mind.   He often notes that meditation is more than just relaxing the body and feeling peaceful\, but a powerful tool for becoming aware of awareness itself\, to “catch your mind.”  In this instruction\, written in 2016 to help guide students new to meditation\, Rinpoche explains how we can develop various stages of concentration within our meditation.   In the beginning stage\, called ‘Placing the Mind\,” we become aware of stillness (mind resting on object of meditation)\, movement (mind moving away from object of meditation)\, and awareness (mind moving back to object of meditation).   In the last stage\, called ‘Equal Placement\,’ “Meditation and non-meditation\, day and night\, become undifferentiated. Freed from any sense of stillness being good and movement being bad\, you are not distracted from that state.” \nIt will be a day of visualization\, purification\, healing and contemplation at a beautiful retreat space in Carmel Valley.    We hope you can join us! \nRetreat Schedule\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMorning Session\n8:00am-9:50am: Check in\n10:00am-12:00pm: Session 1-Welcome\, Setting Intention\, Introduction to Fire Puja\, Fire Puja Ceremony\n\n\nAfternoon Break\n12:00pm-1:30pm: Vegetarian Lunch (provided)\n\n\nAfternoon Session\n1:30pm-3:00pm:  Session 2–Nine Instructions for Concentration Meditation\n3:00pm-3:30pm:  Break\n3:30pm-5:00pm: Session 3–Nine Instructions for Concentration Meditation\n\n\n\n\nLocation of Retreat\nThe retreat will take place at a private retreat space called Grace Sanctuary in Carmel Valley\, about one hour’s drive from Pacific Grove.   Detailed directions and the address will be sent to all registered participants.   Carpooling is encouraged. \nMore About the Retreat\nThe main teachings will take place in a beautiful yurt (circular structure)\, with some chair seating and cushions for floor seating provided.  Attendees are free to bring their own cushions as needed.  We will be moving from indoor to outdoor spaces for the fire puja ritual\, so attendees will move from sitting to standing\, with some outside seating available. \nPrayers and printed materials will be provided. \nLunch will be served outside at picnic tables\, and will include a simple\, healthy and vegetarian dish. If you have special food needs\, please bring what you need. Retreat participants are responsible for breakfast and dinner on their own\, although coffee\, tea and snacks will be available during breaks. \nRetreat Fee:  $30.00\nFee includes lunch and printed teaching materials. Payment is due in full at registration. \nRegistration Required:\n\n\nPlease register no later than September 20th\n\n\n\nPayment Options\nAttendees may pay by cash or check on the day of the retreat at the registration table\, or payment may be made ahead of the event. \nPLEASE NOTE: Anyone with financial concerns is asked to contact Rachel Christopherson at rachelmdc2016@gmail.com or 831-901-3156. Khenpo Karten Rinpoche wishes that no person be turned away because of financial need. \nCREDIT OR DEBIT CARD PAYMENTS AHEAD:  Please use the Manjushri Dharma Center giving page at:  https://manjushridharmacenter.org/give/ \nCHECK OR MONEY ORDER PAYMENTS AHEAD:  Please make checks payable to “Manjushri Dharma Center.”  Mail checks to Manjushri Dharma Center\, 724 Forest Avenue\, Pacific Grove\, CA 93950.  Alternatively\, checks can be left in the donation box at the Manjushri Dharma Center with “September Retreat” in the memo. \n  \nMore About the Ritual and Teaching\nFire Puja\nThere are several websites that explain more about the ritual of the Fire Puja.   What is Fire Puja\, by Tsem Rinpoche and The Fire Puja Offerings\, from the website Tibetan Buddhism and Culture Blogspot are two sites that explain in detail the meaning\, variations\, and practice of Fire Puja. \nThe Root Text\nParticipants will be given copies of “The Nine Instructions for Concentration Meditation\,” written by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche\, 2016. \nPrecepts\nPrecepts are a set of commitments observed by laypeople during periods of intensive meditation practice or in conjunction with special teachings or holy days.  Precepts are taken to help purify our minds and support our spiritual practice while engaging in retreat.  There are five main precepts that form the basic ethical code of moral conduct in daily life\, and three additional precepts that can be kept on special days.   Precepts are voluntary\, and not required for participation in the retreat.  They are simply listed here for those who wish to do this part of the practice.   No guilt please!  All welcome! \n\n

SUMMARY:Public Talk--Medicine for the Mind: Transforming Suffering into Joy
DESCRIPTION:General Description:  Every living being experiences suffering.  Most people view suffering as something to get rid of and not look back.  However\, suffering can teach us compassion for others and can be used to train our mind in a way that good conditions cannot.  In this very special public talk\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche will give an account of his root guru’s 21 years in a Chinese prison\, where Kyabje Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche transformed an atmosphere of starvation and fear into pure spiritual food and joy.  Join us after our regular meditation class (which runs 10-11am) for this deeply inspiring teaching.  Free event\, all are welcome! \nBackground:  Every year\, Khenpo Karten Rinpoche visits the Bridgewater State Prison to teach students incarcerated there. He composed this teaching originally for them\, and delivered it on May 29th.  After reading the teaching\, presented below\, students in Pacific Grove requested he give the same teaching as a public talk.  This teaching is one of the most powerful and inspiring teachings this editor has ever read. \nRecap of event:  On June 24\, 2017 Khenpo Karten Rinpoche addressed the community with a public talk entitled\, “Medicine for the Mind:  Transforming Suffering into Joy.”  The talk was based on his teaching given to Dharma students in prison in Boston earlier in May.   The attendees read the written teaching aloud in its entirety\, and Rinpoche expanded on “tong-len” or the practice of taking and giving.  It was indeed powerful medicine for the mind.    \nPhoto from Public Talk: \n \nLink to Blog Post:  Medicine For The Mind:  Instructions for My Boston Dharma Brothers On Using Suffering and Obstacles for Mental Development \nDownload Teaching as PDF:  Medicine For The Mind:  Instructions for My Boston Dharma Brothers On Using Suffering and Obstacles for Mental Development

SUMMARY:Blessing of the Waters: Summer Solstice 2017
DESCRIPTION:General recap:  Khenpo Karten Rinpoche offered a Water Blessing Ceremony on the occasion of the Summer Solstice and First Day of Summer at Lovers Point beach in Pacific Grove. The blessing honored all the earth’s elements as Rinpoche chanted to pray for their protection. Participants offered a prayer for world peace and brought flower petals to contribute to this beautiful and moving ceremony.  \nRinpoche’s recap:  Yesterday\, June 21st\, the summer solstice\, we had the 8th water blessing ceremony on the beach at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Offerings were given to the nagas\, the water serpents\, of the three white substances: honey\, milk\, and yogurt\, and many flowers and flower petals of brilliant colors which reset floating on the waves. There was quite a crowd of people! This ceremony of the water element is especially important for California which has droughts and floods and avalanches. I think the Nagas were very pleased! \nPhotos (thank you Stacy Loving\, Heidi Feldman and all others who contributed photos):

SUMMARY:Thargyen Certificate Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:From Rinpoche following ceremony\, June 14\, 2017:   Our Jewel Ornament of Liberation teachings\, which commenced a year and nine months ago\, has now ended and went extremely well.  We had a concluding celebration today with practice of Venerable Milarepa Guru Yoga and offering of Ganachakra.   The Ornament by Gampopa is such a precious\, sacred instruction. We would not be incorrect to recognize it as the first Lamrim\, Stages of the Path to Enlightenment\, to appear in Tibet. It is the first time that I have taught the Ornament in America. I want to thank everyone involved\, all members of my Manjushri Dharma Center who attended and helped make it happen for the wonderful opportunity. Apart from how much it benefitted others\, it is always extremely beneficial for me to able to give such teachings. Thank you so much! \nBackground:\nOver the course of a year and a nine months\, August 2015 to April 2017\, the sangha completed initial study of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation: The Wish-Fulfilling Gem of the Noble Teachings\, by the venerable Gampopa (1074-1153 C.E.\, depicted in thangka above)\,  also known as the Thargyen.   On June 14th\, 2017\, we celebrated all those who participated in this course of study with a special set of prayers (Milarepa sadhana) and a certificate ceremony.    Practitioners also completed a one to two page written reflection of the Thargyen\, and turned those in to Rinpoche.   It was a nice way to celebrate and recognize those who participated in and completed listening\, meditating and contemplation of this comprehensive work. \nThe day before we held this celebration\, a very nice woman came by and donated a beautiful Thangka (religious painting) depicting the Dalai Lama and his life.   It is was very auspicious\, as it was the Dalai Lama who recommended to Khenpo Karten Rinpoche that he teach the Thargyen to his western students.    It was as if the Dalai Lama came to celebrate with us\, the full circle of his idea!  Read More:  The Auspicious Dalai Lama Thangka \nPictures from the Thargyen Certificate Ceremony: \nTsog offering and alter set up to honor Milarepa and Gampopa \n

SUMMARY:Saka Dawa 2017
DESCRIPTION:Message from Rinpoche sent to Sangha on Thursday\, June 8:  Saka Dawa full moon is tomorrow! This is the most holy and important day in all Buddhism. We celebrate the Buddha’s birthday\, enlightenment\, and death (paranirvana). The whole month of Saka Dawa is especially auspicious for creating merit.  I really want my students to have a beautiful\, happy celebration and create great merit in the world!  Don’t miss this important occasion—it comes only once a year. \nGeneral description:  Saka Dawa/Saga Dawa observations take place in the fourth Tibetan month\, honoring Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth\, enlightenment\, and parinirvana. From May 26 to June 24\, 2017\, the planets and stars converge to make things especially auspicious\, therefore\, positive actions can be multiplied 100\,000 times. This is a rare and important period\, so practitioners are encouraged to practice Dharma and positive actions as much as possible during this time\, and to refrain from harmful actions with extra mindfulness. Most holy of all is the full moon day of Saka Dawa\, the 15th day of the Tibetan month\, which will fall on Friday\, June 9th.   \nEditor’s recap:  The Manjushri Dharma Community gathered at 6:30pm\, and attendees brought tsog offerings of flowers\, fruits\, popcorn\, and sweets.  Rinpoche arranged it all into a beautiful offering of food and flowers for the Guru\, Three Jewels\, Assembly of Heroes and Heroines. As part of the tsog ceremony\, assistants made three heaping plates for the Guru\, Buddha\, and Dharma.  The Sangha also partook in the offerings\, imagining the food as holy nectar that purifies all negativities\, to honor the divine within.  It was a beautiful ceremony which served to accumulate merit and purify obscurations.   Rinpoche took the time to explain the various parts of the ceremony to the Sangha\, as this was only the second time a tsog ceremony was performed in our Forest Avenue center.  After the formal tsog ceremony\, participants prayed world peace.  Thank  you to all the Sangha members who helped with photocopies of prayers\, setting up and breaking down of this Saka Dawa ceremony.   Thank you to all who attended and collectively created such good energy for a peaceful world!   \nRinpoche’s recap:  Today\, on the full moon of Saga Dawa\, our offering ceremony went very well and we were able to create a tremendous amount of positive energy for the future. This root of virtue I dedicate to all living beings throughout all realms of existence . Thank you to everyone! \nPictures from June 9th\, 2017 Saka Dawa Full Moon Ceremony: \nMaking special plates to share \nSharing a day of special blessings\, Saka Dawa Full Moon Ceremony 2017 \nAll the flowers made a special alter for Saturday meditation \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nMore information about Saka/Saga Dawa as posted by Rinpoche on his Facebook page: \nSaga Dawa is called the “month of merits” for Tibetan Buddhists. Dawameans “month” in Tibetan\, and “Saga” or “Saka” is the name of a star prominent in the sky during the fourth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar\, when Saga Dawa is observed. Saga Dawa usually begins in May and ends in June.\nThis is a month especially dedicated to “making merit.” Merit is understood in many ways in Buddhism. We can think of it as the fruits of good karma\, especially when this brings us closer to enlightenment. In early Buddhist teachings the three grounds of meritorious action are generosity (dana)\, morality (sila)\, and mental culture or meditation (bhavana)\, although there are many ways to make merit.\nTibetan lunar months begin and end with a new moon. The full moon day that falls in the middle of the month is Saga Dawa Duchen; duchen means “great occasion.” In 2016\, this day falls on Saturday\, May 21st. This is the single most holy day of Tibetan Buddhism. Like the Theravadin observance of Vesak\, Saga Dawa Duchen commemorates the birth\, enlightenment and death (parinirvana) of the historical Buddha.\n\nWays to Make Merit\nFor Tibetan Buddhists\, the month of Saga Dawa is the most auspicious time for meritorious actions. And on Saga Dawa Duchen the merits of worthy acts are multiplied 100\,000 times.\nMeritorious acts include pilgrimages to sacred places. There are many mountains\, lakes\, caves and other natural sites in Tibet that have attracted pilgrims for centuries. Pilgrims also go to venerated monasteries\, temples and stupas. Pilgrims also travel to be in the presence of a holy person\, such as a high lama.\nPilgrims may circumambulate a shrine or other holy place. This means walking clockwise around the holy site. As they circumambulate\, pilgrims may pray and chant mantras\, such as mantras to White or Green Tara\, Om Mani Padme Hum or Buddha Amitabha. The circumambulation may include full-body prostrations.\nDana\, or giving\, may be the most common way for Buddhists of all traditions to make merit\, especially giving donations to temples or to individual monks and nuns. During Saga Dawa\, it’s also auspicious to give money to beggars. Traditionally\, beggars line the roads on Saga Dawa Duchen knowing they are certain to receive something.\nThe lighting of butter lamps is a common devotional practice. Traditionally\, butter lamps burned clarified yak butter\, but these days they might be filled with vegetable oil. The lights are said to banish spiritual darkness as well as visual darkness. Tibetan temples burn a lot of butter lamps; donating lamp oil is another way to make merit.\nAnother way to make merit is by not eating meat. One can take this further by buying animals intended to be slaughtered and setting them free.\n\nObserving Precepts\nIn many Buddhist traditions there are precepts observed by laypeople only on holy days. In Theravada Buddhism these are called the uposatha precepts. Lay Tibetan Buddhists sometimes follow the same eight precepts on holy days. During Saga Dawa\, laypeople may keep these eight precepts on both new moon and full moon days.\nThese precepts are the first five basic precepts precepts for all lay Buddhists\, plus three more. The first five are:\n1. Not killing\n2. Not stealing\n3. Not misusing sex\n4. Not lying\n5. Not abusing intoxicants\nOn especially holy days\, three more are added:\nThe sixth “holy day” precept is to eat only one meal\, before noon. This is a basic precept for many monks and nuns\, but most of the time it doesn’t apply to laypeople. “Grazing” is not allowed; once you’ve stopped eating for thirty minutes\, the meal is done. For Tibetans\, this one meal should not include meat\, eggs\, onions\, garlic or radishes.\nThe seventh “holy day” precept is to avoid sleeping in a high\, soft bed. The eighth is to not wear adornments — jewelry or cosmetics.\nSometimes lay Tibetans turn these special days into two-day retreats\, with complete silence and fasting on the second day.\n\nThere are\, of course\, a variety of rituals and ceremonies performed during Saga Dawa\, and these vary among the several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In recent years\, Chinese security forces have limited Ssga Dawa activities\, including pilgrimages and ceremonies\, in Tibet.
